Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Veterinary Kennel Assistant to join our dynamic veterinary team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong passion for animal welfare, animal handling skills, and a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment for our patients. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to the health and well-being of animals while gaining valuable experience in veterinary care. The position is a paid role designed to support veterinary operations through animal care, kennel management, and client communication.
Responsibilities
- Provide attentive care to animals housed in the kennel, including feeding, bathing, grooming, and exercising to promote comfort and well-being.
- Assist veterinary technicians and veterinarians with medical procedures such as medication administration and animal restraint.
- Maintain cleanliness of kennels, treatment areas, and equipment by performing regular sanitation and disinfecting tasks following aseptic techniques.
- Record detailed notes on animal behavior, health status, and treatment progress to ensure accurate record keeping.
- Support client communication by updating pet owners on their animals’ conditions and answering basic questions about pet care.
- Handle animals safely using appropriate restraint techniques while ensuring their comfort and minimizing stress.
- Assist with laboratory tasks such as sample collection or specimen handling when required.
- Follow all safety protocols including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure a safe working environment for staff and animals.
- Hours: Weekends shifts will be required: Saturday and Sunday 7:30am-12:30pm and 4:00pm-6:30pm Also 1 or 2 shifts during the week Monday-Friday between the hours of 7:30am-6:30pm. Week day shifts will be flexible.
Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a kennel or veterinary clinic setting is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of veterinary terminology, animal husbandry, and animal physiology is essential.
- Demonstrated ability in dog and cat handling, animal restraint, and pet care techniques.
- Experience with laboratory procedures, medication administration, and aseptic techniques is advantageous.
- Strong understanding of animal behavior and anatomy to ensure safe handling and effective care.
- Excellent record keeping skills with attention to detail for medical documentation.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of animal welfare.
- Effective communication skills for interacting with clients and team members.
