Reporting to the Assistant Director of Engineering, the Civil Engineer supports the planning, design, review, and construction of Town infrastructure, including water, sewer, stormwater, and transportation engineering projects.
What You'll Do:
- Update the pavement management system. Add new streets, check field conditions, and help plan future maintenance.
- Help manage water, sewer, stormwater, and transportation projects. Prepare designs, budgets, contracts, and inspection reports.
- Check modeling, testing, and analysis from consultants. Provide technical support during construction.
- Assist with planning infrastructure design and improvements. Work with other departments to assess project needs.
- Check development plans for water, sewer, stormwater, and transportation. Make sure they follow all rules.
- Answer questions about construction engineering plans and requirements. Investigate problems and help find solutions.
- Create plans and designs using GIS, CAD, and other tools.
- Develop construction specifications based on design and engineering principles.
- Help solve problems related to engineering projects.
- Complete reports, plans, contracts, and other paperwork.
- Work with Town staff, contractors, developers, and the public to share information and solve problems.
- Learn about new laws, tools, and trends. Attend trainings and workshops.
- Perform other engineering duties as assigned.
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field.
- Experience reviewing construction and engineering drawings.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be accepted.
- Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license and ability to meet Town insurance requirements.
- VDOT LAP certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles, environmental laws, and construction regulations.
- Strong skills in AutoCAD and other software.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Able to write clear reports, keep accurate records, follow Town codes and construction standards.
- Able to review designs for erosion and sediment control, drainage, traffic control, traffic impact analysis, and road construction.
