Job Summary – Road Department
This position involves hands-on work to keep Hardin County’s roads safe and in good condition. Employees operate equipment, perform repairs, and handle a variety of physical tasks. Work is done under general supervision, but you are expected to stay focused, work hard, and take pride in completing each job safely and correctly. Every day is different, with tasks ranging from road repair to emergency response.
What You’ll Do
- Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, and brooms
- Control traffic with flags during road work
- Install and maintain drainage systems along roadways
- Repair and maintain roads by filling potholes, clearing debris, trimming trees, and removing snow and ice
- Respond to emergencies and storm damage, by helping with cleanup, lane closures, and barricades
- Inspect, clean, and maintain vehicles and equipment daily
- Spread materials such as grass seed, straw, and fertilizer to protect roadsides
- Haul and move materials including rock, dirt, blacktop, and debris
- Assist with construction projects as needed
