Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Dermatology Medical/Surgical Assistant to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in providing high-quality patient care in a dermatology clinic setting. This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. As a Medical/Surgical Assistant, you will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive patient care and support within a clinical, surgical setting. Your responsibilities will encompass various tasks, including escorting patients, collecting vital information, preparing procedure rooms, assisting during surgical procedures, and ensuring adherence to company policies and HIPAA regulations.
Duties
- Assist dermatologists during examinations and surgical procedures.
- Assist Mohs surgeon in Mohs surgical procedures.
- Prepare patients for their appointments by taking medical histories and ensure complete and accurate documentation within the patient’s electronic medical record.
- Maintain accurate patient records, including coding for billing purposes.
- Complete pre-operative intake via a one-on-one interview with the patient, explain surgical procedures, and answer any questions within your scope.
- Educate patients on skincare routines and post-procedure care.
- Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments and managing patient flow.
- Stay updated on medical terminology and coding practices relevant to dermatology.
- Prepare procedure rooms and surgical trays with all supplies needed for procedures.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures in adherence to HIPAA regulations.
- Drape and disinfect the surgical site, administer an injection of local anesthesia, and use a handheld cautery device to achieve hemostasis.
- Assist the physician during all procedures (passing instruments, blotting, cutting sutures, etc).
- Bandage surgical sites, prepare proper discharge paperwork, review wound care instructions with patients, and answer any questions or concerns they may have.
- Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization in an autoclave.
- Collect and accurately process specimens.
- Prepare pathology and lab specimens. Route to correct lab as required by patient’s insurance. Maintain accurate pathology log.
- Remove sutures.
- Notify patients of pathology and lab results.
- Respond to patient questions in the office and on the phone as instructed.
- Schedule or re-schedule appointments with providers, specialists as necessary. Send appropriate records as necessary.
- Maintain medication samples, discard out-of-date supplies, and keep appropriate records.
- Maintain infection control. Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms, and keep supply cabinets well stocked.
Skills and Qualities
- Familiarity with infection control standards and practices is essential.
- Proficiency in using electronic health record systems, particularly Modernizing Medicine (EMA), is a plus.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and coding practices is highly desirable.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse patient populations, including geriatrics.
- Ability to work in high-pressure situations while maintaining attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills and a commitment to providing excellent patient care.
- Must be detail-oriented, organized, and able to multitask effectively in a busy environment.
Experience and Education:
- Medical Assistant (MA) Certification or Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) License required
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) eligible position
- At least 1 year of hands-on experience in Mohs surgery
- Working interview required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is preferred.

- CANDIDATES SHOULD EXPECT SCHEDULE FLEXIBILITY AS SURGERY DAYS MAY BE ADDED OR TAKEN AWAY DEPENDING ON PATIENT DEMAND.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $17.00 - $22.00 per hour
