Role Summary
The Baker is the engine behind some of Sage’s most loved menu items, turning flour, time, and technique into the sourdough, oatmeal walnut, and flower pot bread our guests count on every day. This role blends independent craft with team collaboration, working mostly solo in our dedicated bakery kitchen while staying connected to the rhythm and needs of the café as a whole. From the first loaf of the morning to the last cookie on the dessert case, this person brings consistency, creativity, and care to everything that leaves the bakery.
Role Responsibilities
Baking & Production
- Bakes our full bread program from scratch each day, including sourdough, oatmeal walnut, and flower pot bread, meeting daily quotas that supply both the kitchen and direct customer purchase
- Prepares desserts such as cookies, brownies, and bread pudding with consistency and attention to detail, ensuring every item reflects Sage's scratch-made standard
- Manages bakery prep and production timelines independently, working solo for the majority of each shift while keeping pace with daily deadlines
- Maintains recipe consistency and quality across every batch, adjusting technique and timing as needed to account for seasonal ingredients and conditions
Creative Contribution
- Contributes ideas for seasonal breads and desserts that bring fresh energy to specials and event menus throughout the year
- Collaborates with kitchen and café leadership on new bakery offerings, bringing a passion for baking craft into the broader menu conversation
- Supports catering and event needs with baked goods that reflect the occasion and uphold Sage's quality standards
Kitchen Support & Teamwork
- Assists in the primary kitchen as baking schedules and recipes allow, stepping into standard kitchen responsibilities such as prep, cooking, and plating when needed
- Collaborates with the broader kitchen and café team to maintain pace and support one another, even while working independently for much of the day
- Communicates proactively about bakery inventory, ingredient needs, and production timing to keep operations running smoothly
- Contributes to a positive, respectful kitchen culture where learning, growth, and mutual support are prioritized
Cleanliness & Operational Excellence
- Maintains a clean, organized workspace throughout service, reflecting our commitment to food safety and professionalism
- Washes dishes and supports dishwashing operations as needed to keep kitchen flow efficient
- Completes opening and closing duties in the bakery with care, ensuring the space is ready for the next day's production
- Upholds all food safety standards and café policies across both the bakery and primary kitchen to support a healthy, compliant, and efficient environment
Role Qualifications
- Prior baking experience preferred, with a strong foundation in bread baking technique and dessert preparation
- Ability to work independently and manage a daily production schedule without close supervision, while still functioning as part of a team
- Comfortable standing for the duration of shifts and able to repeatedly lift at least 20 lbs from the floor
- Must be able to obtain food handler certification
- Flexibility to also work standard kitchen shifts as scheduling requires
- Availability for a schedule that varies throughout the week, primarily 7am-3pm
What Makes This Role Different

- No late nights, no fryers, no chaos—just quality work and the satisfaction making food people love
- Real creative input on seasonal specials and events, not just executing someone else's recipes
- A rare hybrid role: build your craft as a dedicated baker while staying connected to the full kitchen team
Schedule & Commitment
- Full-time position with a schedule that varies weekly, primarily running 7am-3pm
- Most weeks are baking-focused (commonly around 4 bakery days), with the occasional standard kitchen shift mixed in depending on need
