Job Summary Teacher
The primary function of the music teacher is to evolve excitement and interest around music and musical performance. The teacher should be well-versed in various music genres and be able to cater to a wide range of musical interests and abilities. Gould Academy, an All-Steinway School, has a unique partnership with the Manhattan School of Music, providing a rich environment for musical excellence and collaboration.
The teacher is crucial in fostering a student-driven community and learning environment characterized by resilience, respect, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging. Adolescents are empowered with agency, supported within a structured framework, and guided through mentorship to thrive and grow. As a faculty member, they work to advance Gould’s mission, vision, and values.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Teaching four music sections per semester

Leading ensemble groups

Support Community Band Attendance

Managing the Manhattan School of Music program

Guiding students in ensemble performances

Overseeing the musical direction of the winter concert, spring musical, spring concert, and graduation performances

Managing the Bingham Auditorium performance spaces

Provide musical and AV support for all daily and special assemblies

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Role
-
Prepare materials and activities in alignment with the curriculum
-
Ensure LMS is accurate and supports a useful digital learning environment

Assign homework and develop experiential activities
-
Identify students with special requirements and create individualized plans in conjunction with the learning support team
-
Commit to cultivating learning environments that respect cultural needs and embrace diverse viewpoints, experiences, and requirements.

Attend academic office hours

Provide timely feedback based on work and classroom behavior and report to the advisor as necessary.

Keep a record of students’ attendance and grades
-
Complete grades, trimester comments, and other forms of academic communication in a timely, professional manner

Research emerging teaching methods

Manage classroom crises and resolve conflict

Collaborate with teams and administrators to foster a positive student experience

Ensure workshops are clean and safety prioritized

Ensure students are supervised and trained for the studio tools
Community Life Role

Help supervise students one night a week in an academic or residential space

Advisor Role

Serve as the communications link between the student, teachers, coaches, and family.

Maintain a strong understanding of adolescent development

Meet with advisees during the scheduled advisory block

Support the advisory curriculum

Provide guidance on course selection, academics, community life and discipline

Communicate with advising team leaders regularly
Athletics/Co-curricular Roles

Keep a record of students’ attendance

Develop engaging and developmentally appropriate activities

Prioritize a healthy, safe, and fun environment

Consult with the Dean of Athletics and Co-Curriculars for practice expectations

This position is responsible for student music interests that enhance the educational experience of the students and are assigned according to interest and workload.

Qualification Requirements:

A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music, Music Education, or a related field.

Experience leading extracurricular music activities, such as marching band, jazz band, or musical theater.

Demonstrated success in organizing concerts and musical events.

Commitment to working with adolescent students and adult colleagues in a boarding school environment

Basic software literacy in Google Suite

Valid passport and US driver’s license
-
Maintain CHRC certification from the Maine Department of Education

Assists the Admissions and Advancement Offices in promoting the program.
