Through an innovative partnership with the Wayne County Board of Education, GMB Powerline Services is seeking an experienced Journeyman Lineman to serve as a Vocational Instructor for its High School Electrical Lineworker Apprenticeship Program. This unique opportunity allows an accomplished utility professional to transition from the field into the classroom while continuing to make a lasting impact on the industry.
The selected candidate will receive all required instructor development, curriculum support, and industry certifications necessary to become a successful Career & Technical Education instructor. Position Summary:
The Vocational Instructor is responsible for delivering classroom instruction, laboratory training, and field-based learning experiences that prepare high school students for careers as apprentice lineworkers. Instruction will emphasize safety, technical knowledge, professional conduct, and employability skills while aligning with West Virginia Department of Education Career Technical Education standards and industry best practices. Working alongside GMB Powerline Services, the instructor will help develop a pipeline of highly skilled graduates prepared to enter registered apprenticeship programs and careers within the utility industry.
Key duties and responsibilities:
· Deliver engaging classroom and hands-on instruction in electrical lineworker fundamentals.
· Maintain a safety-first learning environment that reflects utility industry expectations.
· Teach electrical theory, distribution systems, transmission systems, construction methods, equipment operation, OSHA requirements, and utility safety practices.
· Instruct students in climbing techniques, equipment handling, rigging, pole-top rescue, first aid, CPR, and other required industry competencies.
· Develop lesson plans, assessments, laboratory exercises, and student evaluations.
· Monitor student progress and provide coaching and mentorship.
· Maintain laboratory equipment, tools, vehicles, and instructional materials.
· Coordinate student work-based learning opportunities, internships, and industry experiences.
· Collaborate with GMB Powerline Services on curriculum development, guest instructors, equipment donations, and apprenticeship pathways.
· Maintain required educational records and comply with Board of Education policies and West Virginia Department of Education requirements.
· Participate in professional development and instructor training.
· Promote professionalism, attendance, teamwork, and leadership among students.
· Foster relationships with utility employers to support student career placement.
Other:
· Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals, including tasks outside of the primary job function as operational needs evolve.
Qualifications
Required:
· High school diploma or GED.
· Current or previous Journeyman Lineman status.
· Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible utility linework experience.
· Demonstrated commitment to safety and safe work practices.
· Strong communication and leadership skills.
· Ability to mentor and inspire young people.
· Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
· Ability to pass required background checks and pre-employment screenings.
· Experience mentoring apprentices or conducting employee training.
· OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
Physical Requirements:
The position requires the ability to:
· Demonstrate lineworker techniques and procedures.
· Lift and carry training equipment.
· Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
· Climb utility poles and demonstrate proper climbing techniques as required.
· Operate training equipment safely.
· Stand, walk, bend, and perform physical demonstrations for extended periods.
