Schedule: Primarily weekends, second shift (3pm-11pm). Shifts on other days may be available for first (7am-3pm), second (3pm-11pm), or third (11pm-7am).
Compensation: $19-20 per hour

Program Overview:
The Craig’s Doors Emergency Shelter program operates a 24-hour, year-round, behavior-based, low-barrier shelter for individual adults. The program welcomes all who show respect for the safety and well-being of our guests, volunteers, and staff. Here, guests have access to a safe place to sleep, nutritious meals, and stabilization services.
Job Summary:
The Direct Care Staff member is responsible for maintaining a safe, welcoming, and well-organized emergency shelter environment while providing compassionate, trauma-informed support to guests experiencing homelessness. Direct Care Staff monitor the shelter facility and daily program operations, ensure adherence to program guidelines, respond to crises and emergencies, and help foster an atmosphere of safety, dignity, and respect for all guests, volunteers, and staff.
Working as part of a collaborative team, Direct Care Staff complete guest intakes, maintain accurate documentation, perform routine cleaning, monitor guest well-being, and utilize de-escalation techniques to resolve conflicts and support a peaceful shelter environment. Direct Care Staff play a critical role in creating a low-barrier, behavior-based shelter where guests have access to emergency shelter, basic necessities, and a stable environment while connecting with additional services provided by Craig's Doors. Direct Care Staff are expected to reliably work their assigned weekly schedule, remain engaged through regular use of organizational email and Slack for scheduling updates, team communication, and team meetings
Key Responsibilities:
- Greeting all visitors to the program site and directing them accordingly
- Answering phone, conducting phone intakes of community members seeking placement, and directing messages to appropriate staff
- Monitoring and documenting program activities in the daily log
- Maintaining accurate daily records, including writing shift summaries, and at times, incident reports
- Cleaning and performing site maintenance tasks in accordance with CDC guidelines, including routine cleaning of common areas and high-touch surfaces
- Setting up meal service, making coffee, and re-stocking the snack table
- Providing orientation to new guests and completing intake paperwork
- Conducting regular perimeter checks of facility, inside and outside
- Collecting and disposing of trash as needed
- Completing walk throughs of congregate rooms at regular intervals to monitor guest well-being, and addressing any safety hazards observed
- De-escalating guest conflicts
- Daily inventory checks, refilling supplies, and reporting any needs to Shift Manager in a timely manner
- Collaborating with on-duty Shift Manager and fellow staff for the safety and success of the program
- Responding to health and safety emergencies and consulting with supervisor when needed

Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Bilingual English/Spanish-speaking preferred
- Proficiency in a Windows-based computer environment and Microsoft 365.
- Adheres to professional standards and ethics with healthy boundary-setting.
- Has knowledge of and/or experience with the unhoused community and harm reduction services.
- Able to work with diverse populations and be sensitive to guests' varying needs and challenges.
- Commitment to operating within a trauma-informed workplace that demonstrates radical acceptance and compassion through a balance of kindness, competence and care toward self, colleagues, and populations served.
- Proven experience utilizing de-escalation tools to resolve conflicts. Ability to remain calm during stressful or escalated situations.
- Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to build rapport with diverse populations.
- Ability to use discretion when handling confidential information.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Highly resourceful and able to solve problems with both typical and novel solutions, as needed.
- Certification in First Aid/CPR/AED, bloodborne pathogens, food safety, and the use of Narcan are required. Trainings will be provided by Craig’s Doors if the candidate is not already certified. Attendance at planned trainings and occasional staff meetings may be scheduled outside of the regularly scheduled shift hours. These additional times will be scheduled as far in advance as possible. If a conflict exists with attending, the Direct Care Staff member is expected to discuss in advance with their supervisor.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Requires substantial periods of repetitive work utilizing a computer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
- Work takes place in an emergency shelter, which may involve varying noise levels, temperatures, odors, allergens, and other environmental factors.
- Requires lifting and carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds; requires pushing and pulling equipment and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds; requires frequent sitting, walking, and standing; requires the ability to negotiate stairs; requires visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate equipment.
- Requires maintaining alert situational awareness at all times, including when working overnight shifts. All shifts are “awake shifts,” and sleeping is not permitted by on-duty staff.
