Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Professionals will be compensated basic salary plus 10% for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present.

If hired as bilingual (not required), after passing an assessment of your ability to write and speak fluently. We do not use translating software. Employees with bilingual responsibilities receive a 5% increase in pay.

At the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), we’re on a mission to make workplaces across Washington safer and healthier. The Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) is seeking a Safety Consultant (OSHPRO 3) to join our Consultation Program. You’ll use your expertise in construction, trades, or industry safety to help businesses identify hazards, strengthen safety programs, and comply with WISHA and OSHA standards. You’ll work directly with employers to create safer workplaces, preventing injuries, saving lives, and supporting Washington’s vibrant workforce.

What You’ll Do
-
Conduct on-site workplace consultations across a variety of industries, from construction and manufacturing to small business operations.

Evaluate work environments, identify safety and health hazards, and recommend practical, effective solutions.

Collaborate with employers to develop written safety programs and ensure compliance with WISHA/OSHA standards.
-
Deliver impactful training, workshops, and outreach presentations to improve workplace safety culture.

Promote DOSH Consultation services at trade shows, industry events, and through direct outreach.

Driving is an essential function of this position. The incumbent is required to travel between worksites to perform assigned duties and must operate a state-issued vehicle, motor pool vehicle, or personally owned vehicle (POV), as appropriate. Use of a POV will be reimbursed at the current state mileage reimbursement rate.
Must be able to safely navigate a variety of work environments, including large manufacturing facilities with metal stairways, catwalks, ladders, and uneven terrain. Must also be able to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, using appropriate protective gear.

REQUIRED:

Three years as a Labor & Industries Safety and Health Specialist or Industrial Hygienist.
OR
-
A Bachelor’s degree in physics, chemistry, biology, physiology, statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering mechanics, industrial processes, industrial hygiene and toxicology, design of engineering hazard controls, fire protection, ergonomics, system and process safety, safety and health program management, accident investigation and analysis, construction safety, or other environmental safety and health topics AND three years of experience as a safety and health officer, consultant manager, occupational safety consultant, occupational safety inspector, or related experience.
OR
-
A Master’s Degree in management, business administration, engineering, education, physical and social sciences AND one year of experience as a safety and health manager, occupational safety consultant, occupational safety inspector, or related experience.
OR
-
Four years of full-time journey level experience in one or more of the following industries: logging, construction, electrical, manufacturing, fishing, agriculture, health/medical, service industry or related experience, AND three years of experience as a safety and health manager, occupational safety consultant, occupational safety inspector, or related experience.
College-level education will substitute, year for year, for up to four years of non-safety and health experience.
Additional safety and health qualifying experience will substitute year for year, for education.
Qualifying experience" is defined as experience [conducting independent WISHA or OSHA safety and health inspections in the workplace; or regulatory related inspections in the workplace, including construction, manufacturing and other industries; investigating accidents; and writing technical reports] as a Safety & Health Officer, Consultant, Inspector, or WISHA or OSHA inspection, or regulatory related experience.

Demonstrated leadership in accident investigations, inspections, and regulatory enforcement

Ability to walk and inspect a wide range of work environments from industrial plants to rugged outdoor job sites

Strong communication and conflict resolution skills when working with employers, unions, and legal teams
