Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and energetic School Van Driver to ensure the safe and reliable transportation of students to and from school and related activities. This vital role involves operating school vans with a focus on passenger safety, adherence to traffic laws, and providing excellent customer service to students, parents, and school staff. The ideal candidate will possess strong driving skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to manage student behavior professionally. This paid position offers an opportunity to contribute positively to our community while maintaining high standards of transportation safety and efficiency.
This Job will start Mid August and will only be Monday-Friday.
The hours needed will be 2:30pm-4:30pm
Responsibilities
- Safely operate school vans and paratransit vehicles in accordance with all traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations.
- Ensure the secure loading, unloading, and transportation of students, including those requiring wheelchair assistance or special accommodations.
- Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including CPR and first aid when necessary.
- Maintain clear communication with school staff, parents, and students regarding schedules, delays, or changes in routes.
- Conduct routine vehicle inspections before each shift to ensure proper functioning of brakes, lights, tires, and safety equipment.
- Manage student behavior during transit by applying behavior management techniques and enforcing school policies.
- Respond quickly to traffic changes or unexpected delays to ensure timely arrivals at destinations while prioritizing passenger safety.
- Complete all required documentation accurately, including logs of trips, incidents, and vehicle maintenance reports.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in bus driving or commercial driving with a valid driver’s license appropriate for school van operation.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations at the state and local levels.
- Certification in first aid and CPR is highly preferred; training can be provided if necessary.
- Experience working with children or in environments requiring behavior management skills.
- Ability to assist passengers with wheelchair mobility or other special needs safely and compassionately.
- Strong communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are a plus for diverse communities.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary for vehicle maintenance or assisting passengers.
- Familiarity with emergency stop procedures, defensive driving techniques, and quick response strategies for traffic or roadside emergencies.
- Excellent customer service skills with a professional attitude toward students, parents, and school staff.
