GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Tree Trimmer is responsible for the maintenance, care, and safe management of public trees within municipal rights-of-way, parks, and other city-owned properties. This position plays a critical role in preserving the health, safety, and aesthetics of the community’s urban forest. The ideal candidate is experienced in arboricultural practices, knowledgeable in OSHA safety, ANSI Z133, and International Society of Arboricultural standards, and committed to safe, efficient tree work operations.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
This is a skilled position involving the operation of motorized equipment and semi-skilled position with participation in general labor activities. Primary responsibilities include: trimming, pruning, removal, emergency work, and general maintenance of trees along public rights-of-way, parks, and municipal properties. Work requires knowledge of proper tree care techniques in accordance with industry standards, safe operation of equipment, and the ability to perform physically demanding outdoor tasks in a variety of weather types. Strict adherence to OSHA regulations and ANSI Z133 safety standards are required Duties are performed under close collaboration and often under immediate guidance and direction of the City’s Arborist, allowing some leeway for the exercise of independent judgment. Work is checked closely while in progress and upon completion. Supervision may be exercised over assigned employees.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
- Prune, thin, and trim trees, according to International Society of Arboriculture, ANSI Z133 and OSHA standards, to remove dead, diseased, or obstructive branches to maintain health and safety of the urban forest.
- Safely prune, fell, and remove dead or dangerous trees and stumps, often using chainsaws and rigging equipment.
- Operate aerial lifts (bucket trucks), chippers, chainsaws, power saws, pole pruners, and stump grinders.
- Performs routine inspection, maintenance, and cleaning of tools and equipment.
- Rig, climb, and operate equipment in compliance with OSHA and safety regulations to protect oneself, team members, and the public.
- Clear debris, branches, and logs from the work site using woodchippers.
- Specifically clear branches away from utility lines to ensure electrical service safety typically coordinated with applicable utility companies.
- Follows all applicable safety procedures, including use of personal protective equipment.
- Sets up and maintains traffic control zones and work site safety measures, including pedestrian safety controls. Conduct pre-job hazard assessments.
- Ability to document daily work performed.
- May assist in performing other duties as needed, consistently with the Motor Equipment Operator.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Good knowledge of standard safety practices and ISA industry regulations involved in the pruning, felling, and planting of trees; good knowledge of the practices, materials, and methods used in tree felling and tree pruning ; working knowledge of the planting, cultivating, transplanting, pruning, and shearing of trees and shrubs; ability to climb and to work at considerable height under dangerous conditions; familiarity with an array of knots used in climbing and/or tree work; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; good judgment; dependability; excellent physical condition; and willingness to respond to emergencies. Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors, and to act professionally with diverse groups of people.
ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and;
- Minimum of two (2) years of satisfactory experience in the climbing, pruning, and felling of trees.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT:
- Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License at time of appointment and throughout tenure.
