Job Overview:
The ideal candidate should be a trained technician who assists the physician and operating room staff in rendering professional care to patients undergoing ophthalmic procedures within the ambulatory surgical center, in accordance with established procedures. It is also crucial that the candidate functions cooperatively with physician and staff exhibiting teamwork characteristics.
Responsibilities and Qualifications:
Key Job Responsibilities
- Assists in preparing equipment of surgical procedures
- Assures all necessary instruments are ready prior to each procedure
- Communicates effectively with other staff members in the OR
- Cleans and sterilizes equipment used per policy
- Observes universal precautions
- Handles patient specimens per policy
- Refers situations beyond ability or functions to proper person
- Participates in Performance Improvement/Safety Program
- Performs other tasks and duties as directed by clinical director or physician which are within their legal limitations
- Maintains patients right to privacy following all HIPAA guidelines
- Keeps all working areas clean, neat, and stocked
- Prepares patients are requested by physician according to type of procedure
- Assists with set up with all surgical procedures
- Scrubs hands and arms, dries, and dons sterile gown and gloves according to ASC routines
- Sets up sterile operating field with instruments and supplies necessary for that procedure; arranges instruments, sutures, drapes, and supplies in the manner specified
- Observes strict aseptic technique throughout the procedure
- Dresses surgeon in sterile gown and gloves, as appropriate
- Assists with draping the operative site
- Passes instruments, supplies, and sutures to the surgeon and assistants as needed and in such a manner so that their attention is not diverted form the operative field
- Keeps sterile tables neat and orderly
- Sees that all instruments, needles, sponges, and other supplies are removed from the operating field
- Isolates “dirty” or contaminated instruments and supplies as used, to minimize the spread of infection
- Helps clean the room following a procedure by caring for instruments, supplies, and equipment used in the sterile field
- Returns to the room immediately following the case to prepare for the following procedure
- Treats all instruments with respect and care, notifying the OR staff of any broken instruments or those needing repair
- Assists OR staff with cleaning and restocking room at the completion of the assignment
Minimum Education Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) certification preferred
Minimum Background Requirements
- One or more years of related work experience in the operating room
- Thorough knowledge of sterile technique as is applies to operating room
- Proper method of handling instruments and supplies before, during, and after use
- Knowledge of safe and correct positioning of patients for various procedures
- Knowledge of various instruments used for each type of operation and the proper set-up of an operating room.
- Familiarity with organization and functions of all policies, regulations, and procedures of Practice as they relate to nursing service.
- Ability to work cooperatively with all members of the operating team
- Ability to anticipate needs of the operating team before such needs arise
- Must be in compliance with Hepatitis B series
Physical Demands
- Visual Acuity — Average visual acuity is acceptable. Must be able to use visually orientated medical equipment (e.g., a blood pressure monitor). Must be able to read and administer medication and perform physical assessments.
- Auditory Acuity — Average acuity acceptable. Must be able to use auditory orientated medical equipment (e.g., a stethoscope). Must be able to communicate person to person and via telephone.
- Hand/Eye Coordination — Must be able to adequately perform the use of scissors, syringes, tape and gauze and other simple medical supplies.
- Hand Dexterity — Average dexterity acceptable. Must be able to adequately perform hand movements in the categories as follows: fine manipulation, gross manipulation, simple grasping, firm grasping and hand twisting.
- Partial Body Mobility — Must be able to maneuver upper body and adequately lift 1 to 15 lbs. on a regular basis from floor to waist, 1 to 5 lbs. from waist to shoulder and 1 to 5 lbs. from shoulder to overhead. Must be able to push, pull, bend, twist and reach up to 66 percent of the time. Must be able to push up to 25 pounds to transport patients via lounge chairs, as needed.
