Position Overview
The Virginia Neptunes Professional Basketball Team is seeking a motivated, results-driven Sales Representative to generate revenue through sponsorships, premium seating, ticket packages, advertising opportunities, and community partnerships.
This position is ideal for a self-starter who enjoys building relationships, identifying business opportunities, and representing a growing professional sports organization. The Sales Representative will develop prospects, conduct sales presentations, negotiate partnership opportunities, and maintain strong relationships with businesses, organizations, and individual supporters throughout Hampton Roads and surrounding markets.
This is an independent contractor position paid entirely through commission. There is no guaranteed salary or hourly wage. Earnings are based on completed and collected sales.
Key Responsibilities
- Sell corporate sponsorship packages to local, regional, and national businesses.
- Sell floor seats, season tickets, group ticket packages, and other premium game-day experiences.
- Identify and contact prospective sponsors, advertisers, community partners, and ticket buyers.
- Develop relationships with business owners, corporate decision-makers, nonprofit organizations, schools, churches, and community groups.
- Present customized partnership opportunities that align with each prospect’s marketing goals and budget.
- Conduct sales outreach through telephone calls, email, social media, networking events, referrals, and in-person meetings.
- Maintain an organized pipeline of leads, proposals, follow-ups, and closed sales.
- Prepare and deliver professional sales presentations and sponsorship proposals.
- Negotiate partnership terms within the pricing and approval guidelines established by team management.
- Work with team leadership to ensure all sold benefits and sponsorship assets are accurately documented.
- Provide sponsors and clients with professional communication throughout the sales and fulfillment process.
- Meet established sales activity, revenue, and performance expectations.
- Represent the Virginia Neptunes professionally at games, community events, business meetings, and networking opportunities.
- Provide regular sales updates and revenue reports to team management.
- Support sponsor renewals, upselling opportunities, and long-term account retention.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in sales, business development, sponsorship sales, advertising sales, ticket sales, or account management is preferred.
- Strong verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to confidently communicate with business owners, executives, community leaders, and individual consumers.
- Demonstrated ability to prospect, follow up, negotiate, and close sales.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently with limited supervision.
- Professional, dependable, persistent, and results-oriented.
- Comfortable working in a commission-only sales environment.
- Ability to attend selected games, meetings, networking events, and community activities as needed.
- Knowledge of the Hampton Roads business community is preferred.
- Interest in professional basketball, sports marketing, entertainment, or community development is beneficial.
- Reliable access to a telephone, computer, internet connection, and transportation for in-person meetings is expected.
Compensation
This is a commission-based independent contractor opportunity. The Sales Representative will earn commission on eligible sales that are completed, approved, and collected by the Virginia Neptunes.
Compensation may be earned through the sale of:
- Corporate sponsorship packages
- Floor seats and premium seating
- Season ticket packages
- Group ticket packages
- Advertising placements
- Promotional partnerships
- Community and special-event packages
- Other approved team products or revenue opportunities
Specific commission percentages, payment schedules, sales approval requirements, and eligible products will be outlined in the independent contractor agreement. No base salary, hourly wage, employee benefits, or guaranteed compensation is provided.
Independent Contractor Classification
The selected candidate will perform services as an independent contractor and will receive IRS Form 1099-NEC when legally required. The contractor will be responsible for managing and paying all applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
This position does not create an employer-employee relationship. The contractor is not eligible for employee benefits, unemployment benefits, workers’ compensation benefits, paid leave, retirement benefits, or health insurance through the Virginia Neptunes.

Successful Sales Representatives will be expected to:
- Maintain consistent prospecting and follow-up activity.
- Build and manage a qualified sales pipeline.
- Communicate professionally with prospects, clients, and team leadership.
- Follow approved pricing, branding, and sponsorship guidelines.
- Accurately document all sales and client commitments.
- Achieve mutually established sales and revenue goals.
- Protect confidential team, sponsor, and customer information.
- Conduct business ethically and in a manner that strengthens the Virginia Neptunes brand.
