Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and technically skilled Estimator to join our team. This role is responsible for analyzing RFQs (Requests for Quotation), reviewing technical drawings, and preparing accurate cost estimates for precision-machined components. The ideal candidate has a strong machining background, understands shop processes, and can balance competitiveness with profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and customer specifications
- Evaluate RFQs and determine manufacturing feasibility
- Develop accurate cost estimates based on: Material requirements; Machining time and processes; Tooling and fixturing; Outside services (painting, broaching, heat treat, etc.); Collaborate with engineering, production, and purchasing teams to validate estimates
- Generate detailed quotes and pricing proposals for customers
- Maintain and update cost databases, labor rates, and material pricing
- Communicate with customers to clarify requirements and timelines
- Support continuous improvement in estimating processes and pricing strategies
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in a precision machining or manufacturing environment
- Prior estimating experience in a machine shop strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of CNC machining processes (milling, turning, multi-axis)
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, and technical drawings
- Knowledge of materials (aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, plastics, etc.)
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems and quoting software is a plus
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and general computer skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
- Excellent communication and attention to detail
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM systems
- Experience quoting tight-tolerance or complex parts
- Lean manufacturing or cost-reduction experience
