Technical Sales Engineer
Tulsa, OK | Full-Time
Some salespeople sell products. Others understand what their customers are trying to accomplish, know the equipment well enough to help solve the problem, and build relationships that last for years.
We're looking for the second type.
For over 50 years, Energy Exchanger Company has engineered and manufactured custom ASME shell-and-tube heat exchangers for refineries, chemical plants, power producers, EPC firms, and industrial customers.
This is a highly technical sales role. Our Technical Sales Engineers must understand customer process requirements, specifications, applicable codes and standards, basic mechanical design, and shop fabrication processes, aka "how our equipment is actually manufactured." Just as importantly, they must be able to turn that technical knowledge into strong customer relationships and new business.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain long-term relationships with customers, engineers, EPC firms, and procurement teams
- Identify opportunities, understand customer needs, and actively develop new business
- Read and interpret customer process datasheets, mechanical datasheets, drawings, and inquiry packages
- Read, analyze, and correctly apply customer specifications
- Understand and apply TEMA and API 660 requirements
- Understand and apply ASME Section VIII Div 1, Section I or Section III Div 1 & Div 5.
- Understand basic mechanical design calculations and how design decisions affect fabrication, cost, and performance
- Work closely with Engineering and Estimating to develop technically sound, competitive proposals
- Coordinate with Purchasing, Projects, Quality, and Manufacturing as needed throughout the sales and project handoff process
- Lead technical discussions, proposal reviews, clarifications, and commercial negotiations
- Visit customers as needed to strengthen relationships, discuss projects, understand their operations, and develop new opportunities
- Represent Energy Exchanger Company with technical credibility, transparency and professionalism
The right person combines technical aptitude with strong business instincts.
You:
- Take ownership and follow opportunities through
- Have a high internal drive to meet deadlines and generate opportunities
- Learn quickly, take notes, then immediately use that knowledge
- Respond timely to a high volume of sales requests
- Build relationships through competence, responsiveness, follow-up and trust
- Are comfortable talking with engineers, buyers, project managers, inspectors, and manufacturing personnel
- Can move between a customer conference room and a fabrication shop and understand what matters in both
- Ask good questions and dig into project specifications. Be explicit about assumptions, clarifications and exceptions.
- Communicate timely, clearly and professionally
- Understand that great technical sales involves both developing opportunities and delivering on commitments
- Are willing and able to travel periodically to meet customers and support business development
- Understand that sales calls happen inside and outside of 9a-5p.
- Must be excellent about following up
Our ideal candidate has experience with shell-and-tube heat exchangers, pressure vessels, or custom-engineered process equipment.
Candidates should be able to:
- Read and interpret process and mechanical datasheets
- Read engineering and fabrication drawings
- Analyze and apply customer specifications
- Understand basic mechanical design calculations and concepts
- Understand pressure vessel fabrication and manufacturing processes
- Understand and apply TEMA, ASME Section VIII Div 1, and API 660
- Knowledge and experience in ASME Section III, Div 1 and 5 is a plus.
Compensation
$75,000 – $120,000 annually
This position is intentionally open to candidates with different levels of directly applicable experience.
We are willing to invest in an exceptional candidate from a related engineered-to-order manufacturing background who has the technical aptitude, manufacturing knowledge, and customer-facing ability to learn our industry.
Compensation at the upper end of the range is intended for candidates who bring significant directly applicable experience in shell-and-tube heat exchangers, pressure vessels, technical sales, estimating, and/or engineered-to-order equipment manufacturing.
Your starting compensation will reflect the experience and knowledge you bring to the position—not simply your years in the workforce.
Please note: We are not offering any relocation reimbursement. Candidates must be located in Tulsa, OK, or willing to relocate at their expense.
Related Industries are Encouraged to Apply! You don't need to come directly from the shell-and-tube heat exchanger industry. We encourage candidates with experience in engineered-to-order, project-based capital equipment manufacturing and heavy metal fabrication to submit an application as we are willing to train.
