THE POSITION
Join the Department of Corrections (DOC) as a Corrections Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Instructor and use your trade expertise to guide inmates toward productive, skill-building work. At the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Laurel Highlands, you will train individuals who are working to develop hands-on abilities that support their future reentry. Your leadership helps maintain essential facility systems while encouraging inmates to stay focused, responsible, and engaged. This role allows you to make a steady, meaningful impact every single day.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position provides structured classroom and on-the-job training in the refrigeration mechanic trade. The work supports vocational growth for inmates and helps ensure reliable operation of essential facility systems. As a Corrections Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Instructor, you will perform the following duties:
- Training Delivery: Provide classroom and worksite instruction on refrigeration and air conditioning systems
- Crew Oversight: Direct inmate work crews and review completed assignments
- Documentation Management: Maintain records of training progress, attendance, schedules, and work results
- Tool Control: Issue, track, and account for all tools and materials used during training and work assignments
- Resource Planning: Determine needed materials and submit purchase requests for refrigeration work tasks

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
- Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday.
- This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $53,036.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Five years of experience in the repair and servicing of refrigeration systems or air conditioning systems; or
- Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade.
Special Requirement:
- You must be in possession of an active Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certificate issued by an approved provider.
