Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Commissioning Engineer to support commissioning projects for healthcare, commercial, and institutional facilities. This role is responsible for leading commissioning activities from design review through functional performance testing, startup, and project turnover to ensure building systems operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with design intent. The ideal candidate has a strong background in mechanical and plumbing systems within the buildings industry, with healthcare commissioning experience preferred.
Responsibilities
- Lead and perform commissioning activities for new construction, renovation, existing building commissioning, and asset management projects.
- Execute and document commissioning of mechanical, plumbing, utility infrastructure, and building automation/control systems.
- Perform QA/QC inspections, functional performance testing, integrated systems testing, equipment startup, and system verification.
- Conduct field inspections, witness testing, and verify installation and operation of building systems.
- Review construction documents, specifications, submittals, and commissioning plans to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Coordinate with owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and facility personnel throughout all phases of commissioning.
- Identify deficiencies, develop punch lists, track issue resolution, and verify corrective actions.
- Prepare commissioning reports, test procedures, system documentation, and final turnover packages.
- Support facility operations and maintenance teams during project closeout and training.
- Participate in both office and onsite project activities, including travel to client sites as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Building Sciences, or a related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive commissioning experience involving:
- Utility infrastructure
- Mechanical systems
- Plumbing systems
- Building automation systems (BAS/BMS)
- Building and facility systems
- Facility operations and maintenance (O&M)
- Working knowledge of ASHRAE, NFPA, and TAB (Testing, Adjusting & Balancing) processes, mechanical testing procedures, and applicable building codes.
- Experience leading equipment startup, functional performance testing, and commissioning documentation.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Ability to travel up to 50%, including multi-week field assignments and occasional long-term project assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Healthcare commissioning experience (hospitals, medical centers, laboratories, or similar facilities).
- Industry-recognized commissioning certification (CxA, CCP, CBCP, BCxP, or equivalent).
- Experience commissioning complex HVAC, chilled water, hot water, steam, medical gas, and plumbing systems.
- Familiarity with energy-efficient building systems and sustainable building practices.
