Ferrous Material Handler Operator
Position Summary
The Ferrous Material Handler Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment to move, sort, load, and unload ferrous scrap materials throughout the recycling yard. This position plays a critical role in maintaining material flow, supporting production goals, and ensuring a safe and organized work environment. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-conscious, and capable of working independently while contributing to a collaborative team.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Safely operate a material handler, baler, excavator, grapple crane, or other heavy equipment to move, sort, load, and unload ferrous scrap materials.
- Feed processing equipment and transport materials throughout the yard to support daily operations.
- Load customer, vendor, and outbound shipments accurately and efficiently.
- Perform pre-shift inspections and complete required daily equipment reports.
- Conduct routine maintenance checks, including monitoring fluid levels and reporting mechanical issues promptly.
- Maintain equipment in clean, safe, and proper operating condition.
- Follow all company safety policies, operating procedures, and environmental regulations.
- Communicate effectively with yard personnel and supervisors to ensure efficient workflow and safe operations.
- Monitor work areas for hazards and report unsafe conditions immediately.
- Assist with general yard maintenance, housekeeping, and other operational duties as assigned.
- Support inventory movement and material organization to maximize yard efficiency.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience operating a material handler, excavator, grapple crane, or similar heavy equipment is preferred.
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment in a fast-paced industrial environment.
- Strong attention to safety and adherence to company policies and procedures.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team.
- Good communication and problem-solving skills.
- Strong work ethic with the ability to manage time and prioritize tasks.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to changing operational needs.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work for extended periods throughout the shift.
- Ability to work safely around moving equipment, heavy machinery, and industrial traffic.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
- Ability to work in a noisy environment while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to safely enter and exit heavy equipment multiple times throughout the workday.
