Job Summary
The Dermatology Medical Assistant (MA) supports providers by rooming patients, assisting with medical and procedural dermatology visits (including Mohs, as assigned), documenting in ModMed (EMA), coordinating pathology workflows, and maintaining safe, efficient clinic operations. This role is essential to patient experience, quality, and provider throughput.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Patient Intake & Clinic Flow
- Room patients promptly; collect and document chief complaint, vitals, allergies, medication list, pertinent history, and required screening questions.
- Perform medication reconciliation and update health history in the EMR per clinic standards.
- Maintain awareness of provider schedules; anticipate procedure needs and support smooth patient flow.
- Provide excellent service and clear communication to patients and families.
Clinical Support – General Dermatology
- Prepare exam/procedure rooms and set up sterile or clean fields as required.
- Assist with dermatologic procedures (based on training and competency), including:
- Shave/punch biopsies (setup, assistance, labeling, aftercare)
- Cryotherapy, ED&C, I&D, intralesional injections (as directed)
- Excision support and suture removal
- Dressing application, wound care, and patient education
- Perform clinical photography per protocol (standardized views, consent, accurate labeling).
Mohs Support (as assigned)
- Prepare Mohs rooms, surgical trays, and supplies; ensure equipment readiness.
- Assist during Mohs stages and repairs per provider direction, support patient flow between stages.
- Provide post-op care instructions, dressing changes (as directed), and schedule follow-ups.
Pathology / Specimen Handling
- Accurately label, document, and process specimens; ensure correct requisitions and tracking.
- Maintain chain-of-custody and follow clinic protocols for pathology send-out and result follow-up.
ModMed (EMA) Documentation & Orders
- Document visit details and provider-directed components accurately in ModMed (EMA).
- Enter orders (pathology, labs, referrals, prescriptions) as directed and per policy.
- Support charge capture workflow by ensuring procedures/supplies are recorded per protocol (as assigned).
Safety, Compliance & Operational Support
- Follow HIPAA, OSHA, and infection prevention standards; clean/turn rooms and restock supplies.
- Maintain medication/supply safety: expiration checks, logs (as applicable), and sharps safety.
- Participate in quality initiatives to improve cycle time, patient experience, and clinical reliability.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED.
- Completion of a Medical Assistant program and/or equivalent clinical experience consistent with New Mexico requirements.
- Current BLS/CPR certification (or ability to obtain within specified timeframe).
- Strong comfort with procedure support, specimen handling, and a fast-paced outpatient workflow.
- Proficiency with or ability to learn ModMed (EMA) quickly.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ year experience in dermatology and/or procedure-heavy outpatient clinic.
- Mohs experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with prior authorizations/specialty medications and patient portal communications.
