Position Summary
The Laboratory Specialist is responsible for conducting laboratory testing and analysis that supports the development, validation, and continuous improvement of communications cable and wire products. This position performs routine and specialized testing on raw materials, components, prototypes, and finished products while ensuring accurate documentation of test results and adherence to established laboratory procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform routine and non-routine laboratory testing on raw materials, components, prototypes, and finished products in accordance with established test methods.
- Accurately record, analyze, and maintain laboratory test data, observations, and results.
- Develop, revise, and validate laboratory test procedures to improve testing effectiveness and consistency.
- Set up, operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory testing equipment.
- Assist Product Development and Engineering teams in evaluating new products, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Ensure laboratory testing is conducted safely and in compliance with company quality standards and procedures.
- Identify and communicate abnormal test results or equipment issues to appropriate personnel.
- Train laboratory personnel and other team members on laboratory test procedures and the proper operation of testing equipment.
- Maintain laboratory organization, cleanliness, and equipment readiness.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory efficiency, testing accuracy, and product quality.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of laboratory testing practices and documentation methods.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow technical laboratory procedures and specifications.
- Ability to operate laboratory testing equipment and measurement instruments.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate and repeatable test results.
- Basic mathematical proficiency, including Algebra I concepts.
- Effective problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Computer Skills
- Basic computer proficiency required.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word, preferred.
- Ability to enter, maintain, and retrieve laboratory data using electronic systems.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Materials Science, Chemistry, Electronics, Industrial Technology, or a related technical field preferred.
- Previous laboratory, manufacturing, quality assurance, or product testing experience preferred.
- Experience operating laboratory or mechanical testing equipment is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the laboratory for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate laboratory equipment and precision measuring devices.
- Ability to distinguish colors and read measurement scales when performing testing activities.
