NOW HIRING: Land Survey Crew Chief
Full-Time | Bedford County, TN (based in Shelbyville) | $25 – $30/hour DOE
About the Role
Northcutt Surveying is seeking an experienced and dependable Land Survey Crew Chief to lead field operations on a variety of projects across Middle Tennessee. This position requires a solid background in boundary surveying, as well as hands-on experience with construction layout, topographic surveys, and as-built documentation. The ideal candidate is a skilled technician and strong communicator who takes pride in precision, field readiness, and clear data collection. We're a family-owned shop and our crew is small by design — you won't be a number here. You'll know the owners by first name, use top-of-the-line equipment, and have a real say in how the field operation runs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a field crew on residential, commercial, and civil survey projects
- Perform boundary surveys, construction layout, topographic surveys, and as-builts
- Operate and maintain total stations, GNSS/RTK systems, data collectors, and levels
- Interpret plats, site plans, deeds, legal descriptions, and construction drawings in the field
- Accurately collect and document field data for CAD processing
- Communicate clearly with project managers and CAD technicians to ensure seamless project delivery
- Maintain field gear and ensure equipment accountability
- Train and supervise junior field staff to support workflow and professional development
- Assist with drone-based survey operations (DJI Matrice 4E)
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of field experience, including boundary surveys (required), construction layout (buildings, utilities, grading, etc.), and topographic surveys / as-built documentation
- Proficiency with Carlson Survey / SurvCE / SurvPC software (preferred)
- Strong understanding of field procedures, job prep, and survey equipment setup
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in varied terrain
- Clear, concise documentation and communication skills
- LSIT or professional licensing a plus, not required
