Children’s Ministry Coordinator

Position Purpose
Washington Christian Church in Washington, Illinois, is seeking a part-time Children’s Ministry Coordinator to provide leadership and oversight for our children’s ministries from Birth through 5th Grade while developing an outreach-focused ministry to children and families in our community, including students in Grades 5–8 through Panther Den.
We are looking for someone who loves Jesus, loves children and families, and has a passion for helping the church reach beyond its walls. This person will not simply manage programs but will build ministry teams, equip volunteers, develop relationships with families, and create opportunities for children to know and follow Jesus Christ.

- Ability to recruit, equip, encourage, and work cooperatively with volunteers.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, cooperative relationships with church members, families, volunteers, staff, and community partners.
- Professional character, sound judgment, and the ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality.
- Willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, and special events as ministry needs require.
Primary Responsibilities
Children’s Ministry Leadership
- Provide leadership and oversight for children’s ministries and activities serving children from Birth through 5th Grade.
- Provide leadership, structure, and organization for the Nursery, King’s Kids, Wee Worship, and Jr. Worship ministries.
- Lead the Children’s Ministry Team in planning, recruiting, training, scheduling, and supporting volunteers.
- Help develop and evaluate age-appropriate, Biblically based curriculum and ministry experiences.
- Recruit, equip, encourage, and appreciate volunteers so that children's ministry is adequately staffed and sustainable.
- Plan and coordinate children's special events, seasonal programs, outreach opportunities, and other activities as appropriate.
- Develop an annual ministry plan and recommend programs, policies, and priorities to the Leadership Team.
- Work within established church policies, procedures, and budgets.
Family & Community Outreach
- Develop and lead outreach initiatives designed to connect with children and families who are not currently involved in a church.
- Be a visible, positive presence in the community and actively seek opportunities to build relationships with local families, schools, organizations, and community events.
- Develop relationships with parents and families, both within and outside the church.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding children's programs, events, schedules, and ministry opportunities.
- Lead and provide oversight for Panther Den, WCC's Wednesday afternoon outreach ministry for students in Grades 5–8.
- Work to develop Panther Den as a safe, welcoming environment where students can build positive relationships with caring adults and be introduced to the love of Jesus Christ.
- Identify new opportunities for WCC to connect with children, students, and families in the community.
Volunteer & Ministry Team Development
- Recruit and develop a strong team of children's ministry volunteers.
- Provide appropriate orientation, training, encouragement, and ongoing support for volunteers.
- Establish clear expectations and responsibilities for volunteers serving in children's ministries.
- Work collaboratively with the Children's Ministry Team and other ministry leaders to ensure effective coordination of programs and activities.
- Coordinate appropriately with the Youth Ministry Team Leader regarding the transition and connection of students from children's ministry into youth ministry.
Safety & Child Protection
- Help ensure that all children's programs provide a safe, secure, welcoming, and age-appropriate environment.
- Follow and help implement the church's policies regarding child protection, volunteer screening, background checks, check-in procedures, supervision, and emergency preparedness.
- Communicate concerns regarding children's safety, behavior, or well-being through appropriate church channels.
Leadership & Accountability
- The Children’s Ministry Coordinator will report to the Senior Minister and work closely with the Leadership Team and Children’s Ministry Team.
- Provide regular updates to the Senior Minister and Leadership Team regarding children's ministry, volunteer needs, outreach efforts, and upcoming activities.
- Recommend new programs, policies, and ministry initiatives to the Leadership Team.
- Maintain appropriate calendars, schedules, records, communications, and other administrative responsibilities necessary to support the ministry.
- Evaluate ministries and programs regularly and recommend improvements based on participation, effectiveness, and ministry goals.
Hours
This is a part-time position averaging 15–20 hours per week. Hours are flexible and should be scheduled to accomplish the primary responsibilities of the position. Hours may vary based on ministry activities, special events, seasonal programs, and community outreach opportunities.
Additional hours may be worked with prior approval from the Senior Minister.
The position will require occasional evening and weekend availability for children's programs, Panther Den activities, special events, outreach opportunities, and other ministry needs.
Compensation
$20 per hour, paid bi-weekly, with normal deductions for federal and applicable local taxes as required by law.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the church's required screening and background-check process.
