Job Title: Assistant Teacher
Location: 1485 NE 106th Ave, Portland, OR 97220
Reports To: Lead Teacher, Center Director, or Assistant Director
Job Summary: The Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in creating a nurturing and educational environment for young children. This role involves assisting with daily classroom activities, supporting the individual needs of children, and contributing to the overall functioning of the classroom. The Assistant Teacher plays a key role in promoting positive interactions and ensuring the safety and well-being of all children.
Key Responsibilities:
Classroom Support:
- Assist the Lead Teacher in implementing lesson plans and educational activities.
- Help set up and clean up classroom materials and activity areas.
- Provide support to children during activities, ensuring they are engaged and learning.
Child Supervision:
- Supervise and interact with children to support their social, emotional, and physical development.
- Ensure children are safe and supervised at all times, including during indoor and outdoor play.
- Address minor behavioral issues and redirect children as needed in a positive manner.
Individual Support:
- Assist with the needs of individual children, including those with special needs or developmental delays.
- Provide one-on-one support to children who may require additional help with activities or learning objectives.
- Observe and report on children’s progress and any concerns to the Lead Teacher.
Communication and Collaboration:
- Maintain effective communication with the Lead Teacher and other staff members.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to the planning and coordination of classroom activities.
- Communicate with parents and guardians as directed by the Lead Teacher, providing updates on their child’s progress and any notable observations.
Health and Safety:
- Be familiar with and follow all Oregon licensing rules and requirements for certified child care centers.
- Follow health and safety procedures to ensure a clean and safe environment.
- Assist with routine health checks, such as handwashing and diapering, and address minor injuries or accidents according to center policies.
- Implement emergency procedures as necessary and report any safety hazards to the Lead Teacher or Director.
Administrative Support:
- Help with maintaining accurate records related to attendance, incident reports, and other documentation as required.
- Assist with preparing materials for activities and events, including organizing supplies and setting up learning stations.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years old and enrolled in the state Central Background Registry.
- Step 4 in ORO preferred
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; coursework or certification in Early Childhood Education or a related field is preferred.
Experience: Previous experience working with young children in a child care or educational setting is required.
Certifications: Must obtain within 30 days of employment:
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Food handlers permit
- Recognizing Child Care Abuse and Neglect class
- Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety class
- Prevention is Better Than Treatment class
- Safe Sleep class
- Foundations for Learning class
Skills:
- Understanding of child development and early childhood education principles.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and take direction from the Lead Teacher.
- Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude.
- Experience or understanding about working with persons from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry children (up to 50 pounds) and engage in physical activities (e.g., bending, kneeling, sitting on the floor).
- Ability to stay active and alert throughout the day.
Working Conditions:
- Typically works in a classroom setting with exposure to typical classroom noise and activity.
- May involve occasional evening or weekend activities, such as parent-teacher conferences or center events.
- Arrive on-time, ready to work, for each scheduled shift.
- Be dressed appropriately & ready to be outside every day, regardless of the weather conditions.
- Treat each child with respect. Use positive guidance methods to guide children’s behavior and help them learn self-control.
