What You'll Do
As a Licensed Veterinary Technician, you will serve as a leader within the treatment area, helping ensure patients receive timely, high-quality medical care while supporting doctors and training veterinary assistants.
Patient Triage & Client Communication
· Assess the critical nature of incoming patients.
· Obtain comprehensive medical histories and confirm presenting concerns.
· Obtain vital signs and perform initial patient assessments.
· Secure consent for life-saving and comfort measures, including IV catheter placement and pain management.
· Present patient histories to veterinarians.
· Create and maintain accurate SOAP records.
· Prepare and review treatment estimates with clients.
· Communicate client decisions and treatment preferences to doctors.
· Refer clients requesting financial assistance to the Practice Manager.
· Review discharge instructions with pet owners to ensure continuity of care.
Patient Care & ICU Nursing
· Monitor hospitalized patients for pain, discomfort, and changes in condition.
· Complete treatments accurately and on schedule.
· Communicate significant changes in patient status, diagnostics, or vital signs to the attending veterinarian.
· Ensure diagnostic results are reviewed promptly by the doctor.
· Support efficient patient flow and timely treatment completion.
Advanced Technical Skills
Our technicians are encouraged to fully utilize their training and licensure, including:
Venipuncture & Vascular Access
· Cephalic venipuncture
· Lateral saphenous venipuncture
· Medial saphenous venipuncture
· Jugular venipuncture
· Intravenous catheter placement
· PICC line placement
· Central line placement
Monitoring & Diagnostics
· Oscillometric blood pressure monitoring
· Doppler blood pressure monitoring
· Diagnostic radiography
· CT imaging
· Cystocentesis
· Nasogastric tube placement
Advanced Nursing Skills
· Humane patient restraint
· General and CRI drug calculations
· Anesthesia setup and monitoring
· Urinary catheter placement
· Fecal catheter placement
Leadership & Mentorship
· Train and mentor veterinary assistants.
· Promote teamwork and a positive work environment.
· Support hospital standards for patient care, communication, and efficiency.
Qualifications
· Current Veterinary Technician License in Virginia (or ability to obtain licensure).
· Strong emergency or critical care experience preferred.
· Excellent communication and client service skills.
· Ability to multitask and remain calm in a fast-paced environment.
· Commitment to patient advocacy and high-quality medicine.
· Completion of all state-required continuing education requirements.
Schedule & Physical Requirements
· Full-time position (37–40 hours per week)
· 10–12 hour shifts
· Must be available for days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
· Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the shift
