CHL Systems is seeking a Supervisor of Machine Shop to lead daily machining operations in our CNC and manual machining department. This role is responsible for supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality production of machined components that meet engineering specifications, production needs, and customer requirements.
This is a working supervisor role, with approximately 80% hands-on machining and 20% leadership and coordination responsibilities. The Supervisor of Machine Shop will actively support machining operations while leading machinists and programmers to achieve production, safety, quality, and workflow goals.

What You’ll Do
Machine Shop Leadership & Daily Operations
- Lead daily operations of the machine shop, including CNC programming, setup, machining, inspection, and workflow coordination
- Operate CNC and manual machining equipment while supporting team members as needed
- Plan, schedule, assign, and prioritize work based on production requirements, manpower, and delivery timelines
- Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, work orders, and specifications to determine machining methods, tooling, and setups
- Coordinate daily work to support production schedules, quality requirements, and project priorities
- Promote accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and continuous improvement within the department
Production, Quality & Equipment Oversight
- Support machining of precision components to meet engineering drawings, tolerances, and customer requirements
- Oversee machine setup, calibration, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment readiness
- Support CNC programming activities using CAM software and verify or edit G-code when needed
- Review work for accuracy, quality, and adherence to machining specifications
- Identify production issues, tooling concerns, equipment problems, or workflow delays and take appropriate action
- Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, Production, and Project Management teams to resolve technical or production-related issues
Safety & Compliance
- Promote and enforce company safety policies, procedures, and shop expectations
- Conduct regular safety discussions and maintain a proactive safety culture
- Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to industrial safety standards
- Support safe operation of CNC machines, manual machines, tools, and shop equipment
- Reinforce safe practices related to Lockout/Tagout, machine guarding, material handling, and general shop activity
- Help maintain a clean, organized, and efficient machine shop environment
Team Development & Support
- Train, coach, and develop machinists, operators, and programmers
- Provide performance feedback and support skill advancement across the team
- Assist with onboarding and development of new team members
- Support workload planning, daily communication, and issue resolution within the department
- Help identify training needs, process improvements, and opportunities to improve team performance
- Lead by example through hands-on support, technical knowledge, communication, and follow-through
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum of 5 years of machining experience, including CNC setup and operation
- Minimum of 2 years of leadership experience in a supervisory, lead, or team leader role
- Experience in precision machining and tight-tolerance manufacturing environments
- Experience operating both CNC and manual machining equipment
- Ability to work hands-on while leading and supporting a machining team
Technical Skills & Knowledge
- Experience with CNC programming using GibbsCAM, Mastercam, or similar CAM software
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, work orders, and technical documentation
- Strong understanding of tooling, fixtures, feeds, speeds, machining methods, and setup optimization
- Ability to verify or edit G-code when needed
- Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Office tools
- Knowledge of Lean manufacturing, 5S, and ISO 9001 quality environments preferred
- Understanding of industrial safety practices, including Lockout/Tagout, machine guarding, and PPE requirements

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Manufacturing environment with CNC and manual machining equipment
- Ability to stand, sit, walk, and move throughout the machine shop for extended periods
- Regular lifting and movement of materials up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent use of hands, arms, and fingers to operate machinery, tools, controls, and inspection equipment
- Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, reach, or climb when accessing equipment or materials
- Exposure to machine noise, coolant mist, metal chips, vibration, moving machinery, and machining fluids
- Required use of PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed shoes, gloves, or other equipment as needed
- Frequent collaboration with Engineering, Quality, Production, and Project Management teams
- Fast-paced, team-oriented shop environment focused on safety, quality, and continuous improvement
- Occasional overtime or flexible hours nay be required to meet production schedules
