Sober Companion / Life Skills Mentor

About the Role
Octagon Mentoring is looking for compassionate, dependable, and engaging individuals to provide companionship and support to an adult male with a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
This is not a traditional caregiving role. The goal is to help our client live an active, meaningful, and increasingly independent life while providing appropriate support with everyday responsibilities.
A typical day might include going to a pottery or art class, seeing a movie, skiing, getting out into the community, grocery shopping, preparing meals, working on a budget, or helping maintain a clean and organized living space.
Responsibilities
- Build a positive, supportive relationship with the client
- Participate in recreational and community activities such as art classes, movies, skiing, and other hobbies
- Help plan fun and meaningful activities based on the client’s interests
- Support grocery shopping and meal planning and preparation
- Assist with budgeting and other independent living skills
- Support cleanliness, organization, and healthy routines
- Encourage independence while providing appropriate structure and support
- Help the client engage socially and participate in the community
- Communicate effectively with the mentoring team
- Follow established safety procedures and support plans
Who We're Looking For
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Dependable and responsible
- Patient and compassionate
- Comfortable building genuine relationships
- Active and willing to participate in recreational activities
- Able to provide structure and support without taking over
- Comfortable working independently while being part of a larger support team
- Interested in helping another person build independence and have meaningful experiences
- Experience with medication management
- Background supporting individuals with traumatic brain injuries (TBI)
Experience working with individuals with disabilities, neurodivergence, mentoring, recreation, behavioral health, or direct care is also helpful.
Requirements
- Must be able to pass a background check and drug test
- Must have a safe, reliable, working vehicle
- Must have a clean driving record
Compensation
$30–$40 per hour, depending on experience (DOE)
This is a 1099 independent contractor position.
Training
We provide comprehensive training to help companions understand their role and feel confident in their work. Training includes safety, boundaries, relationship building, supporting independence, and strategies for making everyday activities engaging and meaningful.
