The Special Needs Caregiver is a part-time, direct care position within the Therapeutic Recreation Department. Under the direct supervision of the Therapeutic Recreation Manager, the primary purpose of the Special Needs Caregiver is to provide a safe & positive environment and supportive care for children and adults with disabilities enrolled in the program. Therapeutic Recreation hours run Monday – Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with Saturday Respite program from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Job Duties

Actively and safely supervises and positively engages with adults and youth participating in the program.
- Provides necessary daily care needs to program participants which includes, but is not limited to, lifting, feeding, bathroom needs, exercise, and communication.

Leads program activities such as arts and crafts, leisure activities, group games, field trips, and group swimming.
- Keeps accurate and detailed records of attendance, individual learning and accident/incident reports.

As scheduled, completes opening and closing procedures which include cleaning and organizing the program areas.
- Assists with answering questions, concerns, and comments from program participants, parents/guardians, and the general public; greets every guest/member entering the program area and strives to create a positive first impression.

Maintains positive working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, parents and participants; promotes teamwork and supports overall goals of the Therapeutic Recreation Department.

Conducts daily review of the Communication Log Book to remain informed of any new information, policy, or procedure changes.
- May occasionally operate multi-passenger vehicle to transport program participants on an as needed basis.
- Participates in monthly in-service trainings, staff meetings, or other educational activities as required or assigned.

Maintains awareness of and follows program safety procedures including, but not limited to, check in and check out procedures, fire, tornado, lock down, or any other emergency procedure.

Leads by example and adheres to all Village & Department policies and procedures, and Village codes and ordinances.
- Performs other duties and special assignments as directed within the scope of the Therapeutic Recreation Department.
Physical

Requires frequent public interaction and the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- Must be able to listen and communicate effectively as well and understand operating procedures and written directives.

Work is performed in an indoor recreation environment which requires long periods of attentiveness, standing, sitting, pulling, pushing, reaching, carrying, cleaning, visual monitoring, verbal and written communication, hearing, and moderate lifting (15-50 lbs.).
Educational, Certifications and Experience

Minimum of 18 years of age with a High School Diploma or its equivalent.

Valid Driver’s License (preferred).

Must have or obtain CPR/AED and First Aid within three (3) months of hire.

Previous experience working with individuals with special needs is preferred.

Degree or pursuing a degree in Special Education, Nursing, Therapeutic Recreation or related field preferred.
