Job Description Performs skilled work in major mechanical and metal fabrication repairs on large mechanical road and construction equipment.
Employees in this class are responsible for analyzing the nature of mechanical problems determining the necessary steps of repair,and performing the repairs in the manner that would be the most efficient to the Environmental Services Department (ESD). Although the employees will perform repairs or routine maintenance on automobiles, pickup trucks or small-size road equipment, their primary responsibility will be to perform major repair functions on large mechanical road and construction equipment.

Repairs and performs routine maintenance to all ESD trucks;
Keeps records of repairs and parts used to fix all trucks;
Keeps inventory of parts and fluids needed for all trucks;
Required to obtain quotes on all parts, fluid and outside repairs; subject to approval of the Environmental Services Manager;
Maintains shop equipment; compressor, pressure washer, lawn equipment, power tools, etc.;
Repairs dumpsters; fab and weld metal pieces, replace broken lids;
Fills in as driver for commercial and residential routes as needed;
Deliver and pickup roll offs as needed;
Does equipment body work on all mechanical road and construction equipment which will require the skilled ability to properly fabricate metal by cutting, welding and finishing damage or rusted equipment body parts;
Uses mechanical hand and power-driven tools and equipment;
Performs layout work, estimates of repairs and body work on all mechanical road and construction equipment;
Does other major welding project work in arc and acetylene welding as required;
Will perform all the above work tasks with a minimum of instruction or direction;
Will perform other mechanical work assignments as required;
Does related work as assigned.
Experience and training will include considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in maintaining large mechanical road and construction equipment, including body repair, painting and welding; knowledge of the mechanical and hydraulic principles essential to the maintenance and repair of specialized large road repair equipment; knowledge of the operation principles and the demonstrated ability to repair internal combustion engines; knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive mechanics trade; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions; skill in the use and care of hand machine tools employed in automotive repair and adjustment work;
Must possess a Class "B" commercial driver's license with an air brake and tank vehicle endorsement from the State of Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. This license must remain current and valid to retain this position.
Considerable skilled experience in major mechanical and metal fabricating repairs on large mechanical road and construction equipment, high school graduate or GED supplemented by completion of approved certified training for heavy duty mechanics. Heavy Mechanic Certification and CDL license required.
