Final level (Piping Designer, Senior Designer/Checker, or Lead/DDL) will be determined based on qualifications and demonstrated expertise. Job Summary
As part of Orion's Engineering Services Department, the Piping Designer is responsible for the design, development, and delivery of piping systems for medium to large-scale industrial projects across oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical, power, and related facilities. Depending on experience, this role may function at a designer, senior, or lead/checker level, with responsibility ranging from design execution to formal checking authority and discipline leadership. The position works closely with multidisciplinary teams from concept through detailed engineering and construction support, ensuring designs are accurate, compliant, and constructible.
Essential Functions

Develop and produce piping deliverables, including equipment layouts, piping plans, isometric drawings, MTOs, line lists, and tie-in lists.

Perform piping system layout and design in accordance with P&IDs, project specifications, and client standards.

Serve as formal Piping Design Checker (as applicable), performing detailed technical reviews of layouts, isometrics, models, pipe supports, and MTO packages prior to issuance.

Check deliverables for dimensional accuracy, material accuracy, P&ID compliance, constructability, operational safety, and clash-free routing.

Issue, track, and ensure closure of all check comments prior to final deliverable issuance.

Review designs for compliance with applicable codes and standards (ASME B31.3, B31.1, API, ANSI, ASTM).

Optimize piping routing and layouts to support constructability, accessibility, maintainability, and safety.

Utilize 3D design and review tools (AutoCAD Plant 3D, SmartPlant 3D, CADWorx, Navisworks).

Apply company and client CAD standards, borders, and drafting requirements.

Conduct field walkdowns, site surveys, and tie-in verification for brownfield and existing facility work.

Support construction through RFI responses, field issue resolution, and site coordination.

Coordinate with mechanical, structural, civil, electrical, instrumentation, and process disciplines to ensure integrated design.

Participate in constructability reviews, HAZOPs, model reviews, and interdisciplinary coordination reviews.

Review vendor drawings and data for piping-related equipment and specialty items.

Support material take-offs (MTOs) and procurement deliverables.

Utilize point cloud and laser scanning tools (e.g., Autodesk ReCap, Leica SCENE) for design verification as needed.

Provide technical guidance and mentorship to designers and drafters.

Assist with planning, staffing, workflow, and execution of piping design work.

Interface with clients and vendors on design-related matters.

Serve as Discipline Design Lead (DDL) or Project Design Lead (PDL) as assigned.

Perform other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications

Associate or bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Drafting Technology, or related field preferred; equivalent EPC experience may be considered based on management review.

5 to 20+ years of piping design experience in industrial EPC environments.

Checker experience is a plus but not required.

Proficiency in AutoCAD Plant 3D, SmartPlant 3D, CADWorx, Navisworks, or similar tools.

Strong knowledge of piping codes and standards (ASME B31.3, B31.1, API, ANSI, ASTM).

Experience developing and checking piping layouts, isometrics, and MTOs against P&IDs and specifications.

Strong understanding of constructability, safety-in-design, and operational/maintenance access requirements.

Familiarity with pipe stress analysis coordination and support requirements.

Experience with point cloud/laser scanning technology preferred.

Experience managing discipline scope, schedule, and deliverables (required for lead/DDL roles).

Strong communication and coordination skills in a multidisciplinary EPC environment.

Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint).

Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record; ability to obtain TWIC card if required.

Ability to pass background check and drug/alcohol screening, including random testing.

Must be able to drive a company vehicle to and from job sites or office locations.

Must be able to attend job walks wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) in an operating facility in a hot climate.
