Scenic / Set Designer for Immersive Escape Room (Construction Drawings & 3D Model)
I’m developing a professionally operated escape room in Southern California and am looking for an experienced scenic, set, or experiential designer to help bring the environment to life.
This is not a graphic design or decorating project. I’m looking for someone who can take my overall creative vision, puzzles, and major set pieces and transform them into a cohesive, immersive physical environment that is both visually compelling and practical to construct.
The project will occupy approximately 433 square feet across two connected rooms. One room serves as the primary guest experience, while the second room is accessed through a concealed passage and contains additional gameplay elements.
I have already developed the storyline, puzzle flow, major props, and many of the key interactive elements. What I need is an experienced designer who can help determine the best spatial layout, optimize player flow, integrate scenic elements, and produce contractor-ready construction documents.
Scope of Work
The selected designer will be responsible for:
Collaborating to refine the overall room layout and player flow.
Recommending placement of scenic elements, furniture, props, puzzles, lighting features, and architectural details.
Designing an immersive environment that supports the story while remaining practical to construct and maintain.
Creating a detailed 3D model of the environment (SketchUp preferred).
Producing a complete construction drawing package including:
Dimensioned floor plans
Interior elevations
Sections and construction details as needed
Reflected ceiling plan (if appropriate)
Lighting and scenic element locations
Providing editable source files along with PDF drawing sets suitable for construction.
The designer is expected to contribute professional recommendations regarding layout, spatial flow, and element placement based on experience designing immersive or themed environments.
Ideal Background
Experience in one or more of the following is highly desirable:
Escape rooms
Film or television scenic design
Themed entertainment
Exhibition or museum design
Experiential marketing installations
Live event environments
Stage or production design
Experience creating environments that were actually fabricated and installed is strongly preferred.
Deliverables
Fully dimensioned construction drawings
3D model
Editable source files
PDF drawing package suitable for contractor bidding and construction
Reasonable revision cycle during design development
Project Timeline
The design phase is expected to take approximately 1–3 months, depending on the collaborative design process.
Location
Remote work is acceptable. However, designers located in Southern California are preferred, as occasional in-person meetings or site visits may be beneficial.
Confidentiality
The selected designer will be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement before detailed project information is shared.
I’m looking for someone who enjoys creating immersive environments and wants to help build a memorable guest experience—not just produce drawings. If you have experience designing spaces that people actively interact with, I’d love to hear from you.
Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
