The Town of Yarmouth is seeking a self-motivated individual to assist the Police Department with vehicle maintenance on an as-needed basis, providing support to our full-time mechanic.
STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Mechanic is responsible for the provision of skilled and technical work in the maintenance, inspection, and repair of department motor vehicles and light or heavy equipment to ensure safe and effective working conditions. The employee is required to perform all similar or related duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Performs maintenance and skilled mechanical work to ensure the proper working condition of town vehicles and equipment; modifies vehicles, maintains maintenance records and repairs to equipment and vehicles; inspects vehicles prior to operation to ensure proper and safe working condition.; lubricates and otherwise services the equipment in accordance with the department’s preventative maintenance program.
Keeps an inventory of parts and orders replacement parts and supplies as necessary. Responsible for making fiscally responsible purchases that are in line with budget guidelines communicated through the Deputy Chief or the Financial Administrator. Records expenditures and maintains an accurate balance for all accounts associated with vehicle maintenance. Submits invoices to the police administration for payment.
Attends training sessions as required to maintain awareness and knowledge of updates or changes in occupational safety requirements pertaining to the use of department equipment and tools.
Working under the general direction of the Deputy Chief of Police, this position performs skilled maintenance and repair work on automotive, specialty, heavy equipment, and certain electrical and mechanical equipment; operates heavy equipment in performing a variety of routine and repetitive tasks.
Performs other duties normal and customary for a mechanic including operating various repair equipment, including hand tools, power tools, diagnostic instruments, brake lathe, tire changer, balance machine, oxyacetylene torches, pneumatic tools, as well as office equipment, including a computer and phone; operates motor vehicles when needed.
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have an associate’s degree or an equivalent journeyman’s level of trade knowledge; a minimum of three to five (3-5) years prior work experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
Class D Motor Vehicle Driver’s License required. Must have an ASE Certification and certification to work on hybrid vehicles. The employee must be CJIS certified and must obtain a firearms license. As a condition of employment, the Mechanic must successfully complete a physical examination and maintain personal physical condition to perform job duties in a safe and effective manner. Must be able to successfully pass a background check.
