Job Overview
Perform diversified duties to safely operate forklifts and handle materials throughout the facility. Forktruck Drivers / Materials Handlers are required to retrieve, stage, load, unload, and organize lumber, finished goods, and related materials to support production flow. They must coordinate with Machine Operators, Quality Inspectors, Production Managers, and Shipping personnel to ensure timely movement of materials and accurate fulfillment of orders.
The duties and responsibilities of a Forktruck Driver / Materials Handler include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Work from schedules, specifications, procedures, established methods and practices, monitoring devices, gauges, instruments, and written and verbal instructions.
- Safely operate forklifts and other material‑handling equipment to move lumber, finished product, and supplies throughout the facility.
- Retrieve material for upcoming jobs and deliver it to designated machines or workstations to minimize downtime.
- Load and unload trucks, ensuring accurate counts, proper labeling, and secure placement of materials.
- Pick and stage orders according to job tickets, production schedules, and shipping requirements.
- Inspect incoming and outgoing materials for damage, defects, or inconsistencies and report issues to Machine Operators and Management.
- Maintain organized storage areas, including racks, shelves, and staging zones, ensuring materials are clearly labeled and accessible.
- Assist in recovering usable material from the waste stream and returning it to appropriate storage locations.
- Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean and orderly manner.
- Follow all safety rules, practices, and procedures.
The list of duties required is not all inclusive and can vary based on the needs of the company and management discretion. Other tasks can be assigned if the Production Managers decide they are needed. In general, such other tasks will take a lower precedence than the normal assigned duties, unless otherwise directed. Forktruck Drivers / Materials Handlers are also required to uphold the standards in the Employee Handbook.
Requirements
- Proven experience operating warehouse material handling equipment such as forklifts
- Knowledge of warehouse operations including inventory management systems and shipping & receiving procedures
- Familiarity with safety standards in production environments like OSHA regulations and forklift safety protocols
- Ability to perform manual handling tasks involving heavy lifting while maintaining proper ergonomic practices
- Basic math skills for counting, measuring, and verifying shipments accurately
- Strong understanding of warehouse distribution processes and materials handling techniques
- Warehouse experience or previous roles in warehouse management system operation are highly preferred
