Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lead Composite Blade Repair Technician to oversee and execute the repair, maintenance, and inspection of wind turbine blades, with a focus on composite materials. This role is vital in ensuring the structural integrity and optimal performance of wind turbine blades in onshore renewable energy projects. As a leader in our team, you will coordinate repair activities, mentor technicians, and uphold safety standards while working at heights and in outdoor environments. Your expertise will directly contribute to the sustainability and efficiency of wind energy operations.
Duties
- Lead and supervise composite blade repair projects, ensuring adherence to technical specifications and safety protocols.
- Read and interpret detailed blueprints, electrical schematics, and technical drawings related to blade repairs and structural modifications.
- Perform high voltage electrical work, including hazardous energy control procedures, NEC (National Electrical Code) compliance, and electrical schematic interpretation.
- Conduct wind turbine mechanical repairs, including blade damage assessment, composite patching, resin infusion, and structural reinforcement.
- Utilize rigging techniques for lifting and positioning large blade components safely at heights using tower climbing and wind turbine ladder protocols.
- Coordinate field service activities on wind turbines and generators, ensuring compliance with safety standards for outdoor work at height in various weather conditions.
- Maintain detailed documentation of repair procedures, safety inspections, and maintenance logs following energy control procedures.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and specialized maintenance tools to execute repairs efficiently.
- Support maintenance operations for wind turbines by diagnosing electrical systems issues related to blades or generator components.
- Ensure all work complies with safety protocol adherence including hazard identification, hazardous energy control (lockout/tagout), and safe climbing practices.
- Collaborate with team members on construction site tasks related to wind farm development or upgrades.
- Assist in training junior technicians on composite repair techniques, safety procedures, and equipment use.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in wind turbine maintenance or service technician roles with a focus on blade repair or mechanical systems.
- Strong knowledge of blueprint reading, electrical schematic reading and interpretation, especially related to low voltage and high voltage systems.
- Hands-on experience with welding techniques suitable for composite materials as well as electrical wiring within wind turbines.
- Familiarity with NEC standards, hazardous energy control procedures, and safety protocols for working at heights on wind turbines.
- Ability to read electrical schematics accurately and interpret technical drawings for complex repairs.
- Experience working outdoors in various weather conditions with outdoor work experience preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to climb towers safely using wind turbine ladders; tower climbing certification is a plus.
- Knowledge of wind turbines’ mechanical systems including blades, generators, gearboxes, and electrical components such as electrical systems for renewable energy applications.
- Strong rigging skills for lifting heavy components safely during blade repairs or replacements.
- Excellent field service skills with a focus on maintenance, repair & operations (MRO) within the renewable energy sector.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team while maintaining high safety standards at all times.
