The New Mexico Forestry Division retains lead responsibility for wildland fire management on all non-federal, non-tribal, and non-municipal lands, maintaining fire suppression capacities and emphasizing public and firefighters safety. The Forestry Division promotes healthy, sustainable forests and watersheds in New Mexico for the benefit of current and future generations.
Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for oversight of the Chama district's wildland fire emergency staff and ensuring wildland fire engines and associated equipment, tools, and gear in proper working condition and ready and available for emergency wildland fire response at a moment's notice. The position will also assist the District Fire Management Officer in implementing education and outreach programs across the district. This position may assist the District Forester with Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). The duties include communicating and coordination with uncooperative private landowners, cooperators, partner agencies, and stake holders while maintaining a safe work environment during fire suppression activities and assist in resolving disputes between suppression resources and private forest landowners. All of this is done while assuring that the Division stays in compliance with the applicable State Laws and Regulations.
How does it get done?
The Engine Boss is responsible for:
Training and preparing wildland fire emergency hire staff to be ready to safely and effectively respond to multiple wildland fire scenarios, including initial attack, extended attack, and large incident assignments.
Ensuring district fire equipment including engines, vehicles, tools, personal protective equipment, and other wildland gear are ready and maintained year around for fire suppression and fire management activities including monthly readiness reviews.
Assisting the District Forester and the District Fire Management Officer in providing technical assistance to support communities and landowners in prevention, preparation, and response to wildland fires.
Coordinating with local government, state agencies, tribal entities and federal agencies on wildland fire activities including planning, pre-suppression, readiness, suppression, management, and prescribed fire.
Taking the lead on implementing facility and equipment upkeep with direction from the District Forester and the District Fire Management Officer.
Assisting with technical support for additional division activities including those related to hazardous fuels management, post-fire reclamation, reforestation, and other projects that may arise.
Working with supervisors, colleagues, and subordinates to create a healthy work culture free of harassment.
Maintaining an annual wildland fire certification (red card) as a single resource (ENGB, CRWB) at the arduous level and be willing to work up to 16 hours per day for 14- to 21-day wildland fire assignments that may occur on any day, any time, in and out of state, and in rough terrain and varying weather conditions.

Minimum Qualification
High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) seasons of experience in wildland fire, prescribed fire, fuels management, or forest/watershed restoration. Experience must include participation in wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire, or fuels treatment projects and field/fuel data collection activities. Must hold FFT1 and single resource trainee with a preference for crew boss (CRWB) or engine boss (ENGB) as defined in PMS 3101.
Employment Requirements
Must maintain and possess a current New Mexico Driver¿s License and Defensive Driving Certificate
Working Conditions
Work is preformed both in office and field setting. Employee may be exposed to inclement weather conditions and required to
walk in steep rugged terrain. Employee may be exposed to excessive noise from power equipment and fire suppression
apparatus for long periods. Employee may be required to work with supervised minimum security inmates. May be required to
work evenings, weekends and holidays.
