Job Description:
The Mechanical Inspector III performs the most advanced dimensional inspections, leads inspection workflows, and provides technical oversight within the Quality Department. This role is responsible for complex measurement tasks, first-article inspections (FAIs), inspection planning, and training junior inspectors.
As the senior-level inspector, this position plays a key role in maintaining ISO 9001 / AS9100 compliance and ensuring the accuracy and consistency of inspections across CNC machining and plastic fabrication operations
Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:
Advanced Inspection & Metrology
- Perform complex dimensional inspections using advanced instruments such as:
- CMM (manual or programmed)
- Height masters
- Optical comparators
- Bore gauges, thread gauges, profilometers
- Custom fixtures and advanced precision tools
- Interpret GD&T at an expert level, including position, profile, flatness, and runout tolerances.
- Lead first article inspections (FAIs) per AS9102 and review FAI packages prepared by others.
- Inspect high-precision CNC machined and plastic-fabricated parts with tight tolerances and cosmetic requirements.
Leadership & Training
- Provide daily direction for Mechanical Inspector I and II staff.
- Train inspectors in measurement techniques, blueprint reading, GD&T, and proper documentation.
- Review and approve inspection results from junior inspectors.
- Support Quality Supervisor with workload planning and prioritization.
Quality Documentation
- Approve inspection plans, sampling plans, and inspection methods.
- Prepare and validate final inspection reports, FAI documentation, ISIRs, and capability data.
- Oversee NCR creation, ensuring clear and accurate defect descriptions and measurement data.
- Help maintain traceability and compliance documentation for ISO 9001 / AS9100 audits.
Cross-Department Collaboration
- Work closely with CNC Machining, Fabrication, Assembly, and Engineering to resolve quality issues.
- Assist in root cause analysis, corrective action (CAPA), and continuous improvement activities.
- Provide technical support during new job introductions, prototype builds, and engineering revisions.
Tooling, Calibration & Equipment
- Ensure all inspection tools are maintained and used correctly.
- Identify tooling or fixturing needs and recommend purchases.
- Assist with calibration program management and identify any out-of-tolerance equipment.
Process & Quality System Support
- Develop or improve standardized inspection procedures, work instructions, and forms.
- Participate in internal audits and support external ISO/customer audits.
- Drive 5S and lean improvements within the inspection area.
Teamwork & Culture

- Coordinate with CNC Machining, Fabrication, Assembly, and Production Control to resolve quality issues.
- Communicate clearly about defects, trends, and job status.

Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- 5–8 years of inspection experience in CNC machining or plastics fabrication.
- Expert proficiency with inspection tools and GD&T interpretation.
- Strong blueprint reading skills, including complex geometries.
- Experience preparing and reviewing AS9102 FAIs.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Ability to mentor and train others.
Physical Requirements
- Standing, walking, and performing repetitive measurement tasks for extended periods.
- Ability to lift parts up to 25–35 lbs.
- Frequent handling of small components and inspection tools.
