Job Summary
The Automation Technician is responsible for installing, commissioning, maintaining, and troubleshooting automated control systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation. This role supports industrial and oil and gas facilities by diagnosing and resolving electrical, mechanical, and software-related automation issues while adhering to all applicable safety standards and regulations.
Key Responsibilities

Install, configure, commission, and maintain automation systems including PLCs, HMIs, sensors, actuators, drives, and related control equipment.

Program, configure, and debug PLCs and HMIs to achieve desired system functionality and integration with existing control systems.

Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on automation equipment to minimize downtime and improve reliability.

Troubleshoot automation systems to diagnose and resolve electrical, mechanical, and software-related issues.

Collaborate with engineers, operations personnel, and project teams to implement automation solutions that improve efficiency, quality, and safety.

Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities, system modifications, and equipment performance.

Assist with the design, testing, validation, and integration of new automation projects.

Train operators and maintenance personnel on proper operation and basic troubleshooting of automation systems.

Stay current with automation technologies and recommend system upgrades or improvements when appropriate.

Comply with all company policies, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements while performing job duties.
Qualifications and Education Requirements

Associate degree or technical diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation Technology, or a related field required; bachelor’s degree preferred.

Proven experience as an Automation Technician or in a related industrial automation role.

Strong working knowledge of PLC programming languages such as ladder logic and structured text.

Experience with HMI platforms such as FactoryTalk, Wonderware, or equivalent systems.

Familiarity with industrial communication protocols including Ethernet/IP, Modbus, and Profibus.

Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.

Hands-on experience troubleshooting industrial electrical systems using multimeters, test instruments, and diagnostic tools.

Basic understanding of mechanical systems, pneumatics, and hydraulics.

Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required.

Ability to successfully pass a background check, pre-employment drug and alcohol screening, and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check.

Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure.

Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

High attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

Willingness to work flexible schedules, extended hours, or respond to emergency calls as required.

Knowledge of applicable safety standards and regulations in industrial and automation environments (OSHA, NEC, NFPA).
