Thermal Laboratory Engineering Intern – Liquid Cooling
Job Description:
The intern will assist the Dearborn Laboratory team in supporting testing, validation, and data analysis activities for Vertiv's liquid cooling products and thermal management systems. Responsibilities include test setup, instrumentation, data collection, troubleshooting, and reporting of test results. The intern will gain hands-on experience with laboratory equipment, thermal testing methodologies, and product validation processes while working alongside engineers and technicians to support new product development and sustaining engineering activities.
Preferred Major/Field of Study: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or other related Engineering disciplines
Preferred Year: Junior or Senior
Tools/Skills Exposure: Data acquisition systems, laboratory instrumentation, Microsoft Excel, test equipment, thermal measurement devices, and engineering documentation systems
Responsibilities:
- Support thermal and liquid cooling product testing in laboratory environments.
- Assist with the setup, operation, and maintenance of test equipment and instrumentation.
- Collect, analyze, and document test data for engineering review.
- Create test reports, summaries, and presentations of laboratory findings.
- Help develop and improve test procedures, work instructions, and laboratory documentation.
- Support troubleshooting of test setups, products, and instrumentation issues.
- Verify product performance against engineering specifications and requirements.
- Assist engineers with test design, execution, and data reduction activities.
- Perform routine calibration checks and ensure compliance with laboratory safety practices.
- Collaborate with engineering, product development, and laboratory personnel to support ongoing projects.
- Participate in new product development testing, validation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain accurate records of testing activities and laboratory results.
Qualifications:
Desired Skills:
- Experience with laboratory testing, data collection, and technical analysis.
- Familiarity with engineering instrumentation such as thermocouples, pressure sensors, flow meters, power analyzers, or data acquisition systems.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting.
- Basic understanding of thermal systems, fluid flow, heat transfer, or mechanical systems.
Requirements:
- Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Strong interest in hands-on laboratory testing and product validation.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Ability to analyze data and communicate technical findings clearly.
- Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and test procedures.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work safely around laboratory equipment and test systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment while managing individual assignments.
