Responsibilities
- Dispense medications accurately for various pet species, including compounding medications when necessary to meet individualized needs
- Collaborate with veterinarians and pet owners to develop and implement effective medical management plans
- Conduct patient assessments to determine appropriate medication therapies, considering physiology, anatomy, and medical history
- Manage inventory efficiently, ensuring the availability of essential pharmaceuticals while maintaining proper storage and documentation standards
- Utilize pharmacy software and EMR (Electronic Medical Records) systems to document prescriptions, patient interactions, and treatment outcomes
- Administer immunizations and assist with medication administration procedures such as IV infusions and injections using aseptic techniques
- Provide expert guidance on medication safety, drug interactions, and proper handling protocols aligned with HIPAA regulations and hospital standards
Skills
- Extensive knowledge of veterinary pharmacy practices, including LTC (Long-Term Care) pharmacy principles applied to pet care settings
- Critical care experience with pets, including pain management and acute care interventions
- Completion of a pharmacy residency or clinical pharmacy experience focused on animal health is highly desirable
- Proficiency in pharmacy software systems, EMR/EHR platforms, and inventory management tools
- Strong understanding of medical terminology related to veterinary medicine, physiology, anatomy, and pharmacology
- Experience with compounding medications and aseptic techniques for sterile preparations
- Skilled in patient assessment, medication administration techniques such as IV insertion and infusion therapy
- Knowledge of hospital protocols for immunizations, HIPAA compliance, and medical management of pediatric animals
