Controller, Specialty Food Retail
Jersey City, NJ | $100,000 to $140,000 annually | Full-Time, On-Site
Do you have Controller-level experience in a fast-moving, inventory-intensive business? A growing specialty food retailer in Jersey City is looking for a hands-on Controller to own the full accounting function while working directly with warehouse, logistics, purchasing, production, and store teams.
Must-Haves
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience with direct management responsibility
- Experience in inventory-intensive environments: food, consumer products, retail, distribution, or manufacturing
- Comfortable working on-site and operationally integrated, not desk-only
- Advanced Excel skills including financial modeling
- ERP system experience

Our client is a growing specialty food retailer expanding its footprint across retail, warehouse, and production operations in the U.S. This is a company where finance works side by side with operations, not in isolation from it.
What You'll Do
- Manage the full daily accounting operation: general ledger, AP/AR, payroll oversight, cash management, month-end and year-end close
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements with analysis tied to profitability and operational efficiency
- Build and monitor budgets, maintain cash flow projections, and support leadership with financial modeling for strategic planning
- Own inventory accounting across warehouse and retail locations: monitor levels, review aging and expiration reports, analyze slow-moving or excess inventory
- Partner directly with operations on action plans (promotions, discounts, repackaging) to reduce waste and protect margins
- Maintain internal controls, ensure compliance with accounting standards and tax regulations, and coordinate external audits
- Conduct regular on-site walkthroughs with warehouse, logistics, purchasing, and store teams
Qualifications
- CPA, CMA, or equivalent certification preferred
- Direct experience in specialty food retail, food distribution, or perishable goods inventory management a plus
- Experience with aging, expiration, and shrink reporting in retail or warehouse settings
- Familiarity with waste reduction and margin optimization in food or consumer products
- Multi-location retail or warehouse accounting experience a plus
