Somar Industries is hiring a Quality Technician to join our team in El Paso, TX. This role supports the quality assurance function within our stucco and dry-mix building materials manufacturing facility, making sure every batch that leaves our plant meets the standards our customers count on.
We hire at three experience levels, so whether you're building your quality control skills or you're already an experienced lab tech, we want to hear from you. Pay is based on your experience and demonstrated skill level.
What You'll Do
- Perform quality control tests on incoming raw materials (cement, lime, sand, additives) and finished stucco/mortar dry mixes
- Conduct physical property testing on mixed batches, including sieve testing, moisture content, bulk density, slump/flow, and compressive strength on cured samples
- Inspect packaging, labeling, and batch coding for accuracy
- Accurately record and maintain quality control data, test results, and material certifications
- Keep lab equipment (scales, ovens, sieves, mixers, meters) calibrated and properly maintained
- Generate Certificates of Analysis (COAs) for outgoing shipments
- Monitor blending and mixing processes for adherence to established formulas
- Identify and report non-conforming batches or materials, and help Production and R&D troubleshoot quality issues
- Follow all safety protocols, especially around handling powders and chemical additives
What Matters Most to Us
Technical skill can be trained — these are the traits that make someone successful on our team:
- Reliability: You show up on time, follow through on your schedule, and get things done without needing to be chased down.
- Detail Orientation: You catch mistakes before they become bigger problems and keep accurate documentation, labeling, and quality checks.
- Ownership: You take responsibility when something goes wrong, speak up early, and follow through on what you say you'll do.
- Communication: You communicate clearly with coworkers and leadership, ask questions when something's unclear, and raise safety or quality concerns right away.
- Willingness to Enforce Standards: You follow safety procedures every time and hold the line on quality, even when it would be easier to cut corners.
- Attitude: You stay positive through challenges, support your teammates, and keep the drama out of the workplace.
What Sets Each Level Apart
- Entry-Level: You're detail-oriented and reliable, but you're new to QC/lab work — we'll train you on ASTM testing methods and documentation from the ground up.
- Mid-Level: You've got some quality control experience, pick things up fast, and can work independently on testing and documentation once trained.
- Senior-Level: You bring hands-on QC/lab experience, know testing methods inside and out, can troubleshoot independently, and are comfortable using Excel to analyze data and present findings to leadership.
What We're Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or Associate's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field is a plus
- Experience in a Quality Control or lab setting is a plus, especially in cement, concrete, dry-mix, aggregates, or building materials — but not required for entry-level candidates
- Familiarity with ASTM test methods (e.g., C150, C926) is a plus
- Comfortable using lab equipment such as analytical balances, particle size analyzers, and compression testing machines
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Good communication skills and a safety-first mindset
- Ability to lift/move items up to 80 lbs and be active on your feet throughout the shift
- Certified Forklift License is a plus
- Candidates will be required to complete a practical QC assessment test as part of the interview process
