Shift Work Schedule:
Shifts may include daytime and nighttime hours, or both. The schedule is comprised of fluctuating workdays.
Monday to Sunday, including some holidays and weekends. Shifts are 12, 10, and 4 hours
Position is subject to mandatory activation, on-call, and call-backs in response to immediate public service needs.

About the Role
The Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) plays a critical role in solving cases and bringing justice to victims by providing expert-level forensic services and detailed scene documentation. As a CSI, you’ll respond to a wide variety of scenes and conduct examinations, collect and preserve physical evidence, and perform forensic testing.
This role requires a high level of attention to detail, emotional resilience, strong communication skills, and the ability to make independent judgments in high-pressure environments. You’ll routinely encounter physical and psychological demands—from prolonged exposure to crime scenes and deceased individuals to working in extreme environmental conditions. Candidates should be comfortable operating field equipment, taking meticulous notes, and preparing clear and accurate documentation for court testimony. General physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. or manipulate heavier weight.
Key duties include:
Conducting forensic assessments and documenting crime scenes
Interviewing victims and witnesses to gather additional context
Photographing and mapping crime scenes, preparing sketches and diagrams
Collecting, preserving, and packaging physical evidence for lab analysis
Performing chemical and non-chemical processing for latent prints, trace evidence, and biological fluids
Conducting presumptive tests for suspected blood or unknown substances
Writing comprehensive scene reports and testifying in court
Managing scene logistics, vehicle use, and maintaining forensic tools/equipment

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
To remain in this position, the selected applicant must obtain:
(1) Division of Criminal Information Network (DCIN) General Certification
(2) Certification as a Chemical Analyst through the State of North Carolina
(3) International Certification as a Crime Scene Investigator through the International Association for Identification's Board Certification Program
within one year of eligibility.
