Job Purpose
Learn and develop skills in operating casemaking equipment through hands-on training under the supervision of the Casemaker Operator Trainer. Support production by preparing materials, setting up, and maintaining equipment used to produce hardcover book cases while ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency throughout operations.
Essential Duties & Job Responsibilities
- Assemble and prepare materials required to produce hardcover cases in accordance with work order specifications.
- Load boards into hoppers, monitor glue levels, and maintain consistency to ensure proper operation.
- Assist with setup and operation of casemaking equipment to meet production specifications.
- Monitor product quality for size accuracy, appearance, and compliance with standards.
- Maintain accurate counts, complete job logs and skid tickets, and communicate material needs with forklift operators.
- Keep the machine and surrounding area clean and organized, including clearing debris and performing end-of-shift cleanup.
- Perform basic lubrication and ensure all machine guards are properly in place.
- Use rulers, calculators, and measurement tools for accurate setups and production.
- Rewind smaller material rolls into larger rolls using a rewinding machine as needed.
- Follow all ISO, JWI, and SOP standards while assisting in daily operations.
- Follow direction and guidance provided by the Casemaker Operator Trainer.
- Support scheduled preventive maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
- Assist maintenance staff with updates on mechanical issues or supply needs.
- Adhere to OSHA, company, and departmental safety standards and report unsafe conditions immediately.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor or trainer.
Technical Skills
- Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to learn machine operation.
- Ability to read and interpret job orders and specifications.
- Basic math and measurement proficiency (fractions, decimals).
- Ability to use rulers, calculators, and measurement tools accurately.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and recordkeeping.
- Self-motivated with an eagerness to learn.
Interpersonal Skills
- Dependable and disciplined with a strong focus on accuracy.
- Team-oriented and capable of following direction from trainers and supervisors.

Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Forklift certification required (or must obtain within 5 days of hire).
- Familiarity with bindery or book production operations preferred.
- Experience with mechanical or manufacturing processes a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Standing/Walking: ~85% (operating, inspecting, and cleaning equipment).
- Sitting: ~15% (documentation and brief periods of rest or observation).
- Lifting: Up to 50 lbs. (boards, glue containers, and case materials).
- Reaching/Bending: ~30% (loading hoppers, performing maintenance, and cleaning tasks).
- Manual Dexterity: Frequent use of hands for adjusting machines, handling boards, and quality checks.
Shift Availability
Day Shift: 7:00am - 7:00pm. Please note that modified schedules are a possibility.
