The Construction Project Engineer Internship at JB Steel provides students with comprehensive exposure to both project management and on-site construction activities. Interns will engage in practical, hands-on experiences on large-scale projects, collaborating with experienced professionals to supervise technical operations and support administrative duties. The Project Engineer works closely with both the Project Manager and Site Superintendent, balancing technical aspects of projects with administrative tasks. It’s a hands-on position that often takes place at major project sites. The Project Engineer plays a crucial part by offering technical expertise throughout construction, connecting design goals with on-site execution. Key duties include coordinating project activities, solving technical problems, and making sure construction meets all plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements. By supporting the construction process with technical knowledge, the Project Engineer helps ensure everything is carried out according to standards and design intent.
Responsibilities
Review and interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and contracts for accuracy and completeness.
Coordinate with architects, engineers, consultants, and subcontractors to address technical queries and resolve design discrepancies.
Assist in procurement of specialized materials and equipment.
Review and analyze submittals and shop drawings ensuring accuracy & completion.
Monitor site activities for technical compliance, inspect workmanship and materials, and ensure adherence to codes and standards.
Support project manager with change order reviews, requests for information (RFIs), and quality assurance procedures.
Prepare and maintain comprehensive project documentation, including daily reports, engineering logs, and test results.
Implement solutions to engineering and construction challenges that arise during project execution.
Conduct technical meetings, participate in commissioning and handover processes, and provide training as needed.
Required Qualifications
Currently pursuing a bachelor’s in construction management, engineering or related
3+ years of relevant commercial construction experience.
Proficiency with project management tools.
Demonstratable ability to read and understand construction plan drawings.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Familiarity with construction codes, standards, and regulations.
