Most firms say they're family oriented.
Usually what they mean is they'll buy pizza during busy season.
This one means something slightly different.
The leadership team still talks about culture as if it's their main product. The tax returns just happen to pay for it.
That's probably why people join from larger firms and stay.
Because they get the resources and client exposure they wanted, without feeling like they've become employee number 437.
Why are they hiring?
Growth.
The boring answer is the firm has expanded significantly over the years.
The more interesting answer is they're trying to stay ahead of the growth rather than hiring after everyone is already overwhelmed.
It's a surprisingly rare strategy.
They'd rather add good people now than ask their existing team to absorb another busy season.
The work
One of the benefits of a firm this size is variety.
You'll work with:
- Real estate businesses
- Restaurants
- Manufacturers
- Professional service firms
- Non profits
- Owner managed companies
Some are simple.
Some are not.
The point is you don't spend three years becoming the world's leading expert in one tiny corner of tax.
You become a better advisor because you see more.
Busy season
Nobody is pretending it doesn't exist.
What matters is how it's handled.
Hours can climb into the 50s during peak periods.
The difference here is that anything above 40 accrues back as comp time.
It's a small detail.
But small details usually tell you more about a firm than the mission statement ever will.
The part candidates tend to like
The firm is large enough to have strong systems, diverse clients, and genuine progression opportunities.
But small enough that people still walk down the hallway to ask questions instead of scheduling a Teams call for next Thursday.
That sounds insignificant.
Until you've worked somewhere that lost it.
Who usually likes it here?
People who enjoy relationships.
With clients. With colleagues. With the community around them.
The firm is heavily involved in charity work and local initiatives, but more importantly, it doesn't feel transactional.
It's simply part of who they are.
The same applies internally.
People are trusted to do their jobs.
Which tends to bring out the best in good professionals.
Not ready with a resume? Or want a bit more information before applying? That's fine. Apply the old-fashioned way, or simply reach out to me on LinkedIn or through the Distinct Recruitment website. I'll happily talk you through the role, the firm, and where it could take you before you make any commitments.
I'm Abigail Stephen, Recruiter at Distinct. I don't just look at job specs; I look at people, and where they'll thrive. It's not about filling gaps. It's about finding a fit that lasts.
Outside of work, balance for me is Pilates to reset, travel to explore, and skiing to recharge. Because the truth is, you don't slog through hours for the love of a spreadsheet. You do it for the freedom it buys you. Same principle here.
