About the Position
Hilton Garden Inn Chesapeake/Suffolk is looking for a reliable, hands-on Handyman / Preventative Maintenance Technician to join our hotel team.
This position is responsible for keeping our 135-room hotel, guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house areas, and equipment safe, functional, clean, and in good working condition.
We are looking for someone who doesn't wait for something to become a major problem. The right candidate will be able to identify maintenance issues, perform preventative maintenance, complete repairs, and communicate problems before they affect our guests.
This is a hands-on position that requires someone who is comfortable working independently, troubleshooting problems, using basic tools, and moving throughout the property during the shift.
What You'll DoGuest Room Maintenance
- Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance in guest rooms.
- Repair or replace damaged or worn items when appropriate.
- Troubleshoot basic HVAC and thermostat issues.
- Replace filters and perform routine HVAC maintenance.
- Address issues with doors, hinges, locks, hardware, and cabinetry.
- Repair or replace damaged TV cabinet doors and other room furnishings.
- Repair or replace curtains, shades, blinds, and related hardware.
- Address issues with ADA room shades and other accessibility-related equipment.
- Repair or replace refrigerator components when appropriate.
- Address plumbing issues such as tub stoppers, drains, faucets, toilets, and other basic fixtures.
- Identify leaks, water damage, stains, mold concerns, or other potential property issues and escalate appropriately.
- Make sure rooms are properly maintained before being returned to service.
- Complete preventative maintenance on rooms according to the hotel's PM schedule.
Public Area & Building Maintenance
- Inspect guest floors, hallways, stairwells, lobby, meeting spaces, restaurant areas, pool areas, and other public spaces.
- Repair minor drywall, paint, trim, flooring, and wall damage.
- Replace light bulbs, fixtures, batteries, and other basic components.
- Maintain doors, closers, hinges, handles, and other hardware.
- Address furniture and fixture repairs.
- Assist with maintaining the hotel's exterior areas.
- Identify trip hazards, damaged surfaces, leaks, lighting issues, and other safety concerns.
- Keep mechanical and maintenance areas organized and clean.
Preventative Maintenance
- Perform scheduled PM inspections throughout the hotel.
- Identify problems before they become guest complaints or major repairs.
- Maintain records of completed preventative maintenance.
- Follow up on outstanding maintenance issues.
- Monitor recurring problems and communicate them to management.
- Assist with room and property inspections.
- Help maintain the hotel's maintenance logs and inventory of parts and supplies.
- Keep tools and maintenance equipment properly organized.
General Maintenance Support
- Assist with furniture and equipment movement.
- Assemble, install, repair, and adjust hotel fixtures and equipment.
- Assist with deliveries and moving equipment when needed.
- Assist other departments with maintenance-related needs.
- Work with outside contractors and vendors when directed by management.
- Respond to maintenance requests from the Front Desk, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage, and management.
- Support hotel projects, renovations, and capital improvements as needed.
We Are Looking For Someone Who
- Has hands-on maintenance, handyman, facilities, construction, hotel maintenance, or building maintenance experience.
- Can troubleshoot problems instead of simply reporting them.
- Has experience using common hand and power tools.
- Understands basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drywall, painting, and general building maintenance.
- Can perform preventative maintenance.
- Is comfortable working in guest rooms and public areas.
- Has strong attention to detail.
- Can work independently without constant supervision.
- Is dependable and takes ownership of assigned work.
- Can prioritize multiple maintenance requests.
- Understands the importance of completing work correctly the first time.
- Has good communication skills.
- Can interact professionally with hotel guests and employees.
- Is comfortable working in a fast-paced hotel environment.
- Can safely lift, carry, push, and move equipment and materials.
- Is willing to work weekends and holidays when business needs require it.
Physical Requirements
This position is physically active and requires the ability to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Bend, kneel, reach, climb, and work in confined areas.
- Lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
- Push and pull carts and equipment.
- Use hand and power tools safely.
- Work on ladders when necessary and permitted.
- Work in hot, cold, wet, and outdoor environments.
- Move furniture and equipment as needed.
- Perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the workday.

A successful Handyman / Preventative Maintenance Technician will:
See it → Fix it → Document it → Prevent it from happening again.
We want someone who notices the loose door before a guest complains about it, sees the damaged curtain before it becomes a room inspection failure, catches the leaking fixture before it damages the floor, and identifies an HVAC issue before the guest calls the Front Desk.
This position is an important part of maintaining our guest experience, property condition, safety, and Hilton brand standards.
Attendance & Reliability
Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential.
The hotel operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and maintenance issues do not always occur during convenient hours. Employees must be dependable, arrive on time, communicate appropriately regarding absences or delays, and be willing to assist with weekend and holiday coverage when required.
