Responsibilities
- Safely operate school buses, observing traffic laws and transportation safety regulations.
- Ensure the safe loading, unloading, and supervision of students
- Maintain discipline and manage student behavior to promote a respectful and safe environment onboard.
- Communicate clearly with students, parents, school staff, and dispatchers using effective communication skills.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections to verify vehicle mechanical condition and ensure compliance with vehicle codes.
- Respond quickly to traffic changes or road hazards to ensure timely arrivals and departures.
- Adhere strictly to state and local commercial driving laws, school policies, and transportation safety regulations.
Qualifications
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a school bus endorsement, air brake restriction removed, or ability to obtain one upon hire.
- Proven experience in bus driving, school bus operation.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, emergency stop procedures, and defensive driving techniques.
- Experience working with children or in childcare environments is highly desirable.
- Strong communication skills in English.
- Mechanical knowledge of vehicle systems is advantageous for routine inspections and troubleshooting
- Pass a pre-employment drug test
- Complete criminal background checks, including SBI/FBI fingerprints
- Complete Child Protection Registry check
- Pass a Delaware school bus physical with TB screening if needed
- Have no more than 5 points on the 3-year driving record under Delaware’s school bus endorsement rules
- No license suspension, revocation, or disqualification for moving violations in the last 5 years
