Position Summary
The Assistant Construction Trainer delivers hands-on workforce training in conservation, forestry, and environmental stewardship while mentoring YouthBuild participants as they prepare for employment and post-secondary opportunities. Working collaboratively with the Construction Trainer and community partners, including Eagle Eye Institute, the Trainer provides classroom instruction, supervises field projects, and creates meaningful work-based learning experiences that develop technical, leadership, and career readiness skills.

Workforce Training & Instruction

Deliver daily instruction aligned with the HBI PACT curriculum and YouthBuild conservation and forestry training standards.

Integrate classroom learning with hands-on field experiences that reinforce workforce skills and environmental stewardship.

Collaborate with the Construction Trainer to provide an integrated construction and conservation training experience.

Monitor participant attendance, progress, and skill development.
Field Project Supervision

Supervise youth work crews performing conservation, forestry, landscaping, trail maintenance, community beautification, and minor building repair projects.

Ensure safe operation of tools, equipment, and work sites in accordance with OSHA, HBI, and agency safety standards.

Teach proper worksite practices, tool safety, teamwork, and professional expectations.

Maintain equipment, materials, and inventory used in training activities.
Youth Development & Mentoring

Serve as a positive mentor and role model for participants.

Foster leadership, responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Support participants in achieving educational, employment, and career goals.

Encourage participant engagement, retention, credential attainment, and successful transition to employment or post-secondary education.
Community Partnerships & Program Support

Coordinate experiential learning opportunities with Eagle Eye Institute and other community partners.

Organize career exploration activities, field trips, volunteer projects, educational workshops, and community service events.

Assist with planning and implementation of Youth Services Department events and special projects.

Represent NNCC and YouthBuild at community meetings and workforce development events.
Documentation & Compliance

Maintain participant records, attendance, training documentation, and required reports.

Track participant progress toward program milestones and industry credentials.

Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and continuous quality improvement activities.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
-
High school diploma or GED required.
-
Minimum of two (2) years of experience in conservation, forestry, landscaping, construction, environmental education, or a related field.

Experience working with youth or young adults in workforce development, education, recreation, mentoring, or community programs.

Knowledge of conservation practices, environmental stewardship, workplace safety, and proper use of hand and power tools.

Strong leadership, mentoring, organizational, and communication skills.

Ability to supervise youth in classroom, outdoor, and community-based settings.

Valid Massachusetts driver's license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Technical training or an Associate's degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, Construction, Education, Workforce Development, or a related field preferred Experience facilitating youth groups, workshops, or mentoring programs.

Experience with YouthBuild, HBI PACT, or other workforce development programs.

OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.

CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.

Experience coordinating community partnerships or service-learning projects.

Bilingual (English/Spanish).

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Work is performed in classrooms, community settings, and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.

Regular travel to training sites, community partners, and project locations is required.

Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and work outdoors for extended periods.

Ability to safely operate hand and power tools.

Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
