Main Job Duties:
Statutory Responsibilities:

Establishes the cause and manner of death.
- Pronounces death and determines what time the death occurred & takes custody of the body.
- Performs case evaluation to determine acceptance or declining of jurisdiction.
- Adheres to Colorado Revised Statutes and United States Immigration and Naturalization Regulations in relation to death investigations.
Scene Investigation:

Investigates circumstances of death to determine cause and fix responsibility for accidental, violent, or unexplained death.

Makes positive identification of deceased; identifies and notifies next of kin.
- Testifies at inquests, hearings, and court trials.
- Confers with officials of public health and law enforcement agencies to coordinate interdepartmental activities.
- Performs activities for disposition of unclaimed corpses and personal effects of deceased.
- Completes reports and files death certificates.
- Assists the Coroner in office management responsibilities.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation or general education degree (GED), supplemented with a two-year certificate from college or technical school, and one year of related experience and/or training.
- Basic office computer skills with specialized experience in database manipulation.

Certifications:

Must obtain the Colorado Coroner's Association Death Investigation Certification and must be able to participate in continuing education to maintain the certification. Initial certification must be obtained within one year of employment.
- Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s license without any restriction due to driving record. Must also be able to drive a county vehicle.

Work is performed primarily in off-site locations (in houses, outdoors, etc.).
- Incumbent will occasionally experience outside environmental exposure to inclement weather conditions as well as being frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
- The employee may encounter situations involving high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold or heat, risk of electrical shock, explosives, risk of radiation, and vibration.
- Some sedentary work is also possible.
- The following physical demands are involved: standing, walking, running, bending; climb or balance; kneel, crouch, or crawl; taste or smell; use of hands to finger, grasp, feel; reach with hands and arms; pushing, pulling, and lifting, and/or carrying up to 50 pounds and/or moving 100 pounds.
- Clear vision of close objects as well as seeing to distances of up to 20 feet or more (use of corrective eyewear is acceptable).
- Work includes hearing voice conversations, and talking. Some keyboarding is required.
- This position requires regular travel through the County and to make occasional trips to other locations that may or may not require overnight stays.

Benefits for Full Time Employees:
Paid Holidays: Gilpin County provides 13 paid holidays per calendar year. An employee will be paid ten (10) hours per holiday.
Vacation: The first year of employment, (based on the anniversary of the hire date) full-time employees are given 40 hours of vacation and earn 3 hours of paid vacation leave bi-weekly. After that time, leave shall accrue as follows:

Full-Time employees are encouraged to take their earned vacation leave each year. Vacation time accrual shall cap at the maximum amount and shall not exceed the maximum accrual amount, based on total months of service.
Sick Leave: Full-Time employees shall accrue four (4) hours of sick leave each bi-weekly pay period. The maximum sick leave that may be accumulated by such an employee is 600 hours.
Personal Leave: Full time employees will receive 30 hours of personal leave per year. Personal time cannot be rolled over to the following year and will not be paid out. Personal time will be added to employees balance the first pay period of the new year. Employees hired throughout the year will receive personal time on a pro-rated basis, based on the quarter year that they are hired. Q1 30 hours, Q2 22.5 hours, Q3 15 hours, Q4 7.5 hours. Personal time terminates on December 31, 2025.
Medical Plans: Gilpin County offers two medical plans with Kaiser and United Health Care. Gilpin County offers a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) for all employees to cover co-pays, deductibles, and other medical expenses. Employees are eligible for benefits the first of the month following 30 days of service. This HRA card will have $3,000.00 on it for an individual or $6,000.00 for a family. Both plans have a max out of pocket for $1,000 individual or $2,000 per family after the use of the HRA card for in network expenses.

Dental Plan: Gilpin County offers dental coverage through Delta Dental with PPO and Premiere network coverages. Individual deductible at $50 and family deductible at $150. In network coverage for preventative and diagnostic services are covered 100%, basic services covered at 80%, major services at 50%, and ortho covered at 50% with a $2,000 max. The plan offers a “Right Start 4 Kids” plan that covers children up to their 13th birthday at 100% with no deductible. Annual max this plan pays for covered dental services is $2,000 per individual covered on the plan.

Vision Plan: Gilpin County offers vision coverage through VSP. In network coverage includes copays at $10 copays with an allowance of $175 per pair of either one prescription eyeglasses or contacts yearly on a 12-month calendar basis and discounts on Lasik.

Retirement: Two retirement savings plans are available through the Colorado Retirement Association: 401(a) and 457 Deferred Compensation Plans
- The 401(a) has a 5% required full match with a 4-year vesting period.
- The 457 Plan is optional and has Pre-tax and Roth Options available. After four years of service, this plan could also include a County match as described below.

Effective July 8, 2025, for all new employees hired on or after this date, the graduated vesting schedule for the 5% match on employees’ 401(a) plan is as follows:

Starting January 1, 2026, two new voluntary retirement plan matches will be initiated, with one plan for POST (law enforcement officers) and a second for all other employees, based on years of service. The employee would need to make voluntary contributions into a 457 account at the minimum level in order to be eligible for the County match into the employee’s 401(a).

Short-Term Disability: Short-term disability pays 60% of your earnings with a max of $1,000 per week for up to 11 weeks. Benefits begin on day 15 and your first two weeks you will have to cover with sick or vacation time.
Long-Term Disability: Long-term disability kicks in after 90 consecutive calendar days of a qualified disability. The plan will pay 60% of your earnings with a max of $5,000 monthly.
Long Term Care: In the event that you are injured and need to be treated at a care facility, Gilpin County provides coverage at no cost to you. The plan provides up to $2,000 per month, and up to 3 years in a facility. If you would like to add supplements coverage for a greater amount per month or a longer term, supplemental coverage is available for you to purchase.
