As an Internal Medicine Veterinary Technician, you will serve as a liaison between our internists and clients regarding patient histories, treatment plans, laboratory results, patient updates, and discharge instructions. This role combines advanced nursing care, diagnostic support, anesthesia, and client education to provide exceptional care for internal medicine patients.
Provide advanced nursing care for hospitalized and outpatient internal medicine patients.
Obtain patient histories, collect diagnostic samples, and communicate patient updates to clients and clinicians.
Accurately calculate medical math, including drug dosages, fluid rates, and constant rate infusions (CRIs).
Set up, administer, and monitor CRIs and other advanced treatments.
Induce, monitor, and recover anesthesia for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Assist with and monitor patients undergoing ultrasound, radiology, endoscopy, and other internal medicine procedures.
Set up and assist with endoscopic procedures, including gastrointestinal, respiratory, urinary, and nasal endoscopy. Clean, maintain, and troubleshoot endoscopic equipment.
Assist with advanced diagnostic procedures, including body cavity centesis, needle aspirates, biopsies, ultrasounds, CT, and other specialty procedures.
Obtain blood, urine, and other laboratory samples and perform advanced diagnostic testing as needed.
Place and maintain a variety of catheters, feeding tubes, and oxygen delivery systems within scope and training.
Administer medications, blood products, nutritional support, and other prescribed treatments.
Recognize changes in patient condition and communicate concerns promptly to the veterinarian.
Create and implement nursing care plans for hospitalized patients.
Perform and interpret patient monitoring, including vital signs, blood pressure, ECG, and anesthetic monitoring parameters.
Provide client education and discharge instructions, including demonstrations for insulin administration, subcutaneous fluids, feeding tubes, and home care treatments.
Support clinicians and clients through all stages of patient care, including compassionate end-of-life care.
Maintain anesthesia, radiology, and specialty equipment in accordance with hospital standards.
Mentor and assist with training veterinary students, technicians, and other associates.
Collaborate with other hospital services to support patient care and hospital operations.
