General Statement Of Duties
Performs responsible technical work performing chemical and biological tests in a wastewater treatment plant laboratory necessary for the monitoring of effluent quality; participates in plant operations and maintenance as needed.
Distinguishing Features of the class
An employee in this class collects samples, calibrates equipment, and performs a variety of chemical and biological tests to ensure the safe operation of domestic and commercial water and waste treatment. Work also includes maintaining a database of laboratory results and information, completing necessary reports, and maintaining records and files. The employee is subject to hazards associated with wastewater and chemical work, including exposure to electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, and poor ventilation. Work with raw sewage may also be subject to the final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is reviewed for conformance to testing and reporting procedures and accuracy.
Essential Duties and Tasks

Collects samples from a wide variety of locations in and around the wastewater plant, including upstream and downstream; packages and prepares samples for contracted or in-house analyses.

Performs a variety of standardized laboratory tests and analyses of wastewater, raw and treated water samples to determine the efficiency of treatment.

Prepares solutions and reagents and calibrates laboratory equipment.

Interprets laboratory tests and prepares required reports, and enters data into the computer terminal.

Maintains an inventory of chemicals, culture media, required forms, and other laboratory supplies.

Performs quality control program on equipment and supplies to assure reliable test results; maintains laboratory equipment in proper operating order; performs known and unknown tests for state certification.

Consults with, informs, and advises plant personnel about controls to be used, defects found, or changes in the treatment process.

Follows quality control procedures to ensure maintenance of a state-certified laboratory; participates in establishing standard procedures.

Participates in plant operations and maintenance of buildings and grounds as needed or required.

Performs related tasks as assigned.

Ability to pull manhole covers and lift 50lbs.
Educational Requirements
Graduation from a community college with a degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field. Experience in laboratory and treatment plant operations experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Ability to obtain Class 1 Wastewater Laboratory Analyst Certification or Class 1 Biological Wastewater License within twelve months.
